Katie Crutchfield | WAXAHATCHEE NPR Tiny Desk performance 5 Songs 16th December 2024
MUSIC OF THE DAY / WEEK/ MONTH / YEAR!?
WAXAHATCHEE
Elle Mannion | December 16, 2024
The last time Waxahatchee performed at the Tiny Desk, things looked — and sounded — a bit different. In 2013, Katie Crutchfield, sporting baby bangs, performed her bare-boned, devastating songs alone with her eyes mostly closed. "I rolled out of the tour band … I sort of didn't really know what I was doing at all. My amp broke in the middle [of the set]," Crutchfield says of her 2013 performance. And while she was already earning her place as one of the most profound lyricists of the 21st century, much has changed since then for the now Grammy-nominated artist. Across Crutchfield's six albums as Waxahatchee, plus country duo Plains, she's strayed from her DIY punk roots and settled into something more akin to Americana. In this Tiny Desk concert, Crutchfield is cool and cozy behind the Desk; she sways with an easy smile as she kicks off the set with her latest single, "Much Ado About Nothing," alongside a five-piece band. She performs one of NPR Music's best songs of 2024, "Right Back To It," as well as Tigers Blood's title track and an album standout, "Crowbar." She and the band end with "Fire," a song that, as the first single from 2020's Saint Cloud, marked the beginning of a beautiful transformation of Waxahatchee's music. "I'm really happy that that exists," Crutchfield says of her 2013 Tiny Desk. "And I'm really happy to be back to show you this new version of the band." Ray Padgett | Flaggin Down The Double Es Newsletter extra | Joan and Bobby!
A Tribute to Bob Dylan and Joan Baez's Duets
Every song they sang together, from the Village folk era through Rolling Thunder and the 1980s
Bob and Joan - Blowing In The Wind
In a few days, the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown hits theaters. Joan Baez plays a major role in the film, and the actress who plays her, Monica Barbaro, is excellent. So today, I wanted to pay tribute to Baez.
It’s easy when writing about Bob and Joan to get tangled up in the personal drama. But I want to focus purely on the music they made together. Because I don’t think anyone has ever topped Baez as a duet partner for Dylan. She seems to have an innate ability to follow that unpredictable phrasing that trips up so many others. “We could sing just about any kind of thing and make it make sense,” Dylan himself said in the 2009 documentary Joan Baez: How Sweet the Sound.
There were two primary periods where they sang together: the early-to-mid ‘60s and the Rolling Thunder tours. Plus a handful more in the ‘80s as well. Rather than going chronologically, where it’s too easy to veer back into the personal biography stuff rather than the music, I’m going to go alphabetically through the songs they duetted on. I came up with 21 different songs they sang together across all that time—or at least 21 where we have recordings. There are reports of some other early duets we can’t hear: “Masters of War,” “Farewell,” “Don’t Think Twice” (though, notably, not “Girl from the North Country,” which their characters sing together in the movie).
Let’s take a song-by-song look through the canon of Baez-Dylan Duets
Roxy Music - BBC Sessions, Volume 2: In Concert, Paris Theatre, London 72 | Albums That Should Exist
Roxy Music - BBC Sessions, Volume 2: In Concert, Paris Theatre, London, Britain, 8-3-1972
This concert, recorded for BBC radio, took place a couple of months after the release of the band's first album, "Roxy Music." It also took place just after the release of the band's first hit single, "Virginia Plain," which was not included on the album. The songs are mostly from the first album, plus the single. However, they also played a song introduced as "The Bogus Man, Part 2." In fact, the song was an early version of "Grey Lagoons," which would appear on the band's 1973 album "For Your Pleasure."
Most of the songs here were officially released as part of the "super deluxe edition" of the "Roxy Music" album. However, the song "The Bogus Man, Part 2" was not included, probably because it was significantly different from the final version. Furthermore, none of the BBC DJ chatter between songs were included. But I wanted to include that, because it was actually part of the concert, with the DJ talking on stage as it happened. In this case, the DJ was Bob Harris, known for his quiet voice. Luckily, I was able to find a bootleg version with the extra song and all the banter.
The last song here, "Ladytron," was not part of the concert. Instead, it was from an appearance on the BBC TV show "The Old Grey Whistle Test" in June 1972. I've included it here because there was another version of that song in Volume 1 and the song wasn't performed in the concert here.
This album is 41 minutes long.

Ronnie Lane - BBC Sessions, Volume 2: In Concert, London, Britain, 4-23-1974 | Albums That Should Exist
Ronnie Lane - BBC Sessions, Volume 2: In Concert, London, Britain, 23 April 1974
The first twelve tracks all come from one concert, which took place in London on April 23, 1974. It's from "BBC In Concert," which is probably the early 1970s TV show of that name that I've posted a bunch of albums from. These tracks all were released as part of the album "You Never Can Tell."
But there are a few tracks after that. "What Went Down (That Night with You)," is unreleased, and comes from the British TV show "Rock On with Kid Jensen" in late 1974.
The remaining tracks, 14 through 19, all come from the same concert, which took place in Victoria Palace in London on March 16, 1975. However, different tracks come from different albums: "Just a Moment," "How Come," and "Kuschty Rye: The Singles." I'm guessing somewhere in the record company vaults a full concert recording exists, but only bits and pieces are being released from time to time.
By the way, note that for track 10, "I Believe in You," Lane basically let another musical act, Gallagher and Lyle, take over for one song. At the time, they were mainly known as a songwriting duo, but they would have some hits of their own in 1976.

The Beautiful South - Carry On Up the Charts: The Best of The Beautiful South | BUTTERBOY
K SPECIAL The Beautiful South - Carry On Up the Charts: The Best of The Beautiful South
(30th Anniversary Remastered Expanded Deluxe Edition) [2024] (17 x CDs - count ’em )
A ‘K’ SPECIAL
In celebration of 30 years since the multi-million selling Carry On Up the Charts compilation by The Beautiful South was first released on 7 November 1994, here is my fully remastered and expanded 30th anniversary deluxe edition which now features every single release of their entire career from 1988 to 2007.
Also includes the original 1994 bonus CD with an added bonus track.
Carry On Up the Charts: The Best of The Beautiful South is an album by English alternative pop rock group The Beautiful South. It is the group's fifth album and their first greatest hits collection. It was a major commercial success, reaching number one in the UK Albums Chart and going on to become the second biggest selling album of 1994.
Carry On Up the Charts was released in November 1994, the same year as the band's previous album Miaow, with its only single, "One Last Love Song", being released in October 1994, only two months after "Prettiest Eyes"; the last single to be taken from Miaow. "One Last Love Song" reached number 14 in the UK Singles Chart.
The album includes all of the single releases from the band's first five years in order of their release. Its title is a reference to the Carry On film series. A two-disc Limited Edition version was also released, with the bonus disc containing Non-LP/CD B-sides from the singles.
Released at a time when the group's album sales had been waning, it proved to be a surprise success. The album reached no. 1 on the UK Albums Chart on 3 December 1994 and went on to become the second biggest selling album of 1994.
By the summer of 1995 it was certified as 5× platinum in the UK. Such was the album's popularity, it was claimed that one in seven British households owned a copy.
The cover painting by Matthew Radford is my personally autographed original CD sleeve by Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway.

A staggeringly thorough seventeen disc set!
ROBERT FRANK & THE STONES! | The Rolling Stones - Rocks Off
Gary Lucas is nothing if not as eclectic as me! He notes on his Facebook page that there is a strong Robert Frank connection with the Groobin’ Stooves from movies to stills and album covers!
"Stones clip directed by Robert Frank ("The Americans"), who also art-directed the "Exiles" album. They are having a city-wide Centennial Retrospective of Robert Frank's work here this month and Fri. night at Anthology Film Archives I caught "Candy Mountain", his road film (kinda) co-directed with Rudy Wurlitzer featuring cameos by folks like Eric Mitchell, Mary Margaret O'Hara, Tom Waits, Joe Strummer, Dr. John, bulle ogier, David Johansen and other illuminaris.
This was followed by a coupla short films about Harry Smith by Frank--and also a full-on byootifully restored Harry Smith opus entitled FILM NO. 14 (LATE SUPERIMPOSITIONS) that was one of the most hypnotically gorgeous abstract films I've ever seen."
Thanks Gary!

Roxy Music BBC Peel Sessions Vol 1 1972 (feat. Brian Eno) | Albums That Should Exist
Roxy Music - BBC Sessions, Volume 1: 1972
This album consists of two studio sessions, both hosted by BBC DJ John Peel. The first one, consisting of the first five songs here, took place in January 1972. The second one, consisting of the last four songs, took place in May 1972. All but the last song was officially released as part of the "super deluxe edition" of the band's debut album, "Roxy Music."
These sessions came very early in the band's career. Their first public concerts took place in December 1971, yet they were playing for the BBC less than a month later! Even the second session here took place a month before the band released their debut album in June 1972. Not surprisingly, the songs mostly come from that album.
The band's line-up was somewhat in flux during this time. For instance, guitarist David O'List played on the January 1972 BBC session here, but was replaced by Phil Manzanera a month later. Brian Eno was the keyboardist for all of this, even though he wouldn't stay in the band for long.
This album is 45 minutes long.
