Professor Longhair - Cuttin’ Out (1959)

Yesterday was Fat Tuesday - Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Professor Longhair was a major interest of mine and still is but I again I thought I had or have most every recording and album now. I have said I think that through Dr John since about Gumbo time and then it caused me to study the early piano players and New Orleans Rhythm and Blues from the Allen Toussaint to the Neville brothers and Irma Thomas right through to Archibald and Tuts Washington and others but it was Professor Longhair who impressed me the most and that he managed with Mac Rebbenack's support to get back into the recording studio and release albeit posthumously, Crawfish Fiesta as his last recorded work with his contemporaries was a great joy to me and despite his being found sweeping up the record shop where he worked he at least managed to get out his Swansong knowing he was at least appreciated. Paul McCartney of course booking him for a birthday party too was fabulous for him to know that the 'Bach of Rock' was at last appreciated by a Beatle must have meant a great deal to him. He was also to feature in the first music programme ever broadcast on the UK's Channel 4 TV station in 'Piano Players Rarely Ever Play Together featured Tuts, and Fess with Allen Toussaint but he was to pass during its making and it ended up being a film that covered his wake (only New Orleans can do a wake properly!).

This a single better known as Hey Now, Baby on subsequent albums yet it was 'Go To The Mardi Gras' that was released annually around this time of year to celebrate Mardi Gras!

Fess - Go To The Mardi Gras

Fess - Big Chief
