"THE IMMEDIATE BLUES ANTHOLOGY" - discs 1, 2 & 3 | TWILIGHTZONE

This is nice . . . . . . from over at the always fascinating TWILIGHTZONE. Now I thought I had this but it must have been another British Blues bands compilation and this is great fun if even every track isn’t exactly a gem it shows the development of early British blues like Clapton and Page etc

"THE IMMEDIATE BLUES ANTHOLOGY"- disc 1

Blues Anytime: An Anthology of British Blues is a series of compilation albums featuring tracks from various British blues artists. Three volumes were released by Immediate Records in 1968, followed by Blues Leftovers in 1969...
...The albums feature various tracks from such artists as John Mayall, Tony McPhee, Savoy Brown Blues Band, Jo Ann Kelly, Jeremy Spencer, Cyril Davies, Stuff Smith, Albert Lee, Dave Kelly and Rod Stewart and were also the first release of several exclusive tracks recorded for Immediate between 1965 and '67. These include recordings by Jimmy Page with Jeff Beck, Nicky Hopkins and the All-Stars, plus several tracks recorded by Page and Eric Clapton, backed by members of The Rolling Stones (Bill Wyman, bass, Mick Jagger, harmonica and Ian Stewart, keyboard) and the only recorded output by Santa Barbara Machine Head. When Immediate initially released the original Blues Anytime albums in the USA, the first two volumes were simply titled An Anthology of British Blues, with the third volume renamed as The Beginning: British Blues.
The Blues Anytime tracks were released again by Immediate in 1969 as two double albums titled Anthology of British Blues, albeit presented in a different running order. The first was made up of Vol. 1 side A, Leftovers side A, Vol. 3 side A and Vol. 2 side B, with the second being Vol. 1 side B, Leftovers side B, Vol. 2 side A and Vol. 3 side B.
In 1970, after the dissolution of Immediate Records, RCA Victor reissued the original Blues Anytime albums under the name British Archive Series: Blues for Collectors Vol. 1–4, and in 1986, Line Records in Germany released a Blues Anytime: An Anthology of British Blues box set, featuring reissues of all four of the original Blues Anytime LPs.
In 1996, Charly Records released a 3CD box set titled The Immediate Blues Anthology; the first two discs covering the tracks from Blues Anytime Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 3 and Leftovers presented in their original running order, with the third disc made up of other assorted tracks from the Immediate archives.

The Divine Comedy - The Summerhouse (1994)

Bathed in the warm light of nostalgia and loss.

You were only nine years old
And I was barely ten
It’s kind of weird to be back here again

We love Neil Hannon . . . great writer and singer songwriter and all round musical genius!

Thanks as ever to the legendary bookseller Sharon Murray, my ole muckah who introduced me to his work . . . . . . . . .

Song To Close the Day : The Moody Blues - Question

Thanks to TwilightZone for posting this version . . . . . . . . I was never a great fan of The Moody Blues but this song really spoke to me back then and does still. I loved the voice of Justin here and always have but the prog-rock pomp and overblown aspect of so many of their songs put me off somehow . . . . .the sentiment here though spoke volumes to the youngster who knew what it was to lose someone he loved . . . . . . .

Why do we never get an answer when we're knocking at the doorWith a thousand million questions about hate and death and war?'Cause when we stop and look around us, there is nothing that we needIn a world of persecution that is burning in its greed
Why do we never get an answer when we're knocking at the door?Because the truth, it's hard to swallow, that's what the war of love is for
It's not the way that you say itWhen you do those things to meIt's more the way that you mean itWhen you tell me what will be
And when you stop and think about itYou won't believe it's trueThat all the love you've been givingHas all been meant for you
I'm looking for someone to change my lifeI'm looking for a miracle in my lifeAnd if you could see what it's done to meTo lose the love I knew could safely lead me through
Between the silence of the mountainsAnd the crashing of the seaThere lies a land I once lived inAnd she's waiting there for me
But in the grey of the morningMy mind becomes confusedBetween the dead and the sleepingAnd the road that I must choose
I'm looking for someone to change my lifeI'm looking for a miracle in my lifeAnd if you could see what it's done to meTo lose the love I knew could safely lead me toThe land that I once knewTo learn as we grow old the secrets of our souls
It's not the way that you say itWhen you do those things to meIt's more the way you really mean itWhen you tell me what will be
Why do we never get an answer
when we're knocking at the door?
With a thousand million questions
About hate and death and war

When we stop and look around us
There is nothing that we need
In a world of persecution
That is burning in it's greed

Tell-A-Vision - Tom Verlaine playlist - AQUARIUM DRUNKARD

A reluctant farewell to Tom Verlaine, who helped define (and then quickly transcended) the NYC punk scene of the 1970s, inspiring countless groups through the decades.

We’ll likely have more to say about the man in the days/weeks to come, but in the meantime, here’s an hour’s worth of Television covers stretching from the 1970s on through the present day, putting a spotlight on the impact the band had on the generations of artists that followed in their wake.

Nice biography from Kostas over at Urbanaspirines

Tom & Patti

Looking specifically at four albums; Tom Verlaine (’78), Dreamtime (1981), Songs and Other Things (2006) Around 2006

Tom Verlaine (born Thomas Miller, December 13, 1949 – January 28, 2023) was an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter. Tom Verlaine, whose band Television was one of the most influential to emerge from the New York punk rock scene centered on the nightclub CBGB — but whose exploratory guitar improvisations and poetic songwriting were never easily categorisable as punk, or for that matter as any other genre — died on Saturday in Manhattan announced by Patti Smith’s daughter Jesse.

Another revolutionary figure passes away . . . . . .

TOM VERLAINE

R.I.P. 1949 - 2023

Tom Verlaine, whose band Television was one of the most influential to emerge from the New York punk rock scene centered on the nightclub CBGB - but whose exploratory guitar improvisations and poetic songwriting were never easily categorisable as punk, or for that matter as any other genre - died on January 28 in Manhattan. He was 73. His death was announced by Jesse Paris Smith, the daughter of Verlaine’s fellow musician Patti Smith. She did not specify a cause, saying that he died “after a brief illness.

After putting out a 7-inch single in 1975 on their manager Terry Ork’s label, Television would sign with Elektra and release Marquee Moon in 1977 to critical and commercial success, cracking the Billboard 200 album chart. They quickly followed it up with the more subdued Adventure in 1978, and broke up shortly after. The band would briefly reform in the early ‘90s to record a self-titled studio album.

“Tom Verlaine is the guitarist to mention these days if you’re a young rocker with some pretense to intelligence and originality,” Robert Palmer of The New York Times wrote in 1987.

The layered, often ethereal sound that Verlaine and the other members of Television developed was a far cry from the stripped-down approach of the Ramones and other leading lights of the punk scene. But that scene - which also included bands as disparate as Blondie and Talking Heads - was never as one-dimensional as it was often portrayed.

After hearing of Verlaine’s death, countless musicians have posted tributes in his honor, including the Bangles’ Susanna Hoffs, Thurston Moore, Real Estate, Heems, and Ryley Walker, among others. “Tom Verlaine was a true great, tweeted  Mogwai’s Stuart Braithwaite. “His role in our culture and straight up awesomeness on the electric guitar was completely legendary. Name 10 minutes of music as good as Marquee Moon. You can’t. It’s perfect. Rest in peace Tom x.

TELEVISION
New Adventure In Lo-Fi

Live at the University Of London Union; June 23, 2004. Very good audience recording.

The review for Television’s 1977 debut album, Marquee Moon, in BigO’s 100 Best Albums 1975-1995 is still relevant when listening to Television live in 2004:

“Marquee Moon vacillates between the New York sound of CBGB and the then current rock style of long songs and meticulous soloing which earned Television the unwanted title, Grateful Dead of punk. Fronted by twin guitarists in Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd, both played in a finger-picking style that showed no traces of the usual heavy metal/hard rock cliches… The CBGB side of Television was in the stream of consciousness lyrics that some critics accused of being meaningless and also in Verlaine’s less than macho singing. This was against the grain in ‘77.”

While it might have been uncool then to use the word “epic” for Television, there is certainly a sense of the epic on tracks such as The Dream’s Dream, The Sea and Persia, a similarity found on some of the songs by Calexico. Interestingly, Persia would well be the theme song for what’s currently unfolding in Egypt and the middle east. And for those who felt that the usual 10-minute Marquee Moon wasn’t long enough, here’s one that goes for 13 minutes.

Strong musicianship, their presence at CBGB, drawing influences from the Velvet Underground to Steve Reich and the bands they shared the stage with, not only are Television considered one of the founders of New York punk and new wave, they are still influential to this day (Marquee Moon was No. 2 on Uncut magazine’s 100 Greatest Debut Records).

While the artwork for this show, which was received in a trade, says New Adventure In Lo-Fi, the tracks are tagged as “In To The Dream”, possibly taken from a Japanese boot.

Oh you wanted it LOUD!

Breathtakingly good quality Led Zeppelin from Big O yesterday and you better download it now or it won’t be there long (7 days only!) . . . . it exists in various formats over the years and known widely as Magical Sound Boogie but the guys here have tinkered and tweaked it back up to maximum quality. Grab it now and turn it RIGHT UP to 11

The notes from Dime clear this up

Thanks to nakedeye25 for the remaster and for sharing the show at Dime.

nakedeye25 noted:

This is Zep’s first show of a six-show run at MSG in New York in 1977. The original release is the EVSD “Magical Sound Boogie”, which is a soundboard release of the show. For this remaster I used RipX to separate the original tracks into four wav stems each (Bass, Drums, Other, Vocal).

While it is not a perfect sound separation, it does a surprisingly good job at it. The good part is it does a nice job of separating out the bass, drums and vocals. The tricky part is it combines the keyboards, acoustic guitars, and electric guitars into one track. So please don’t confuse this with a muti-track mixdown…

Having said all that, I believe the results are good enough to share with the community. The original tape cuts are still there. No Quarter has a slight cut in it. Most of the end of Black Country Woman is missing as is the beginning of the next song Bron-Y-Aur Stomp. There is also a slight cut in Over The Top. I have applied some EQ to this recording as well. I also fixed some volume issues in places throughout the show. The tracks are now set up to run as one continuous show.

this sounds amazing to my ears. just about melted my speakers down to IN MY TIME OF DYING on the drive into work today. many, many thanks to the people responsible for making this recording and remaster happen. if you are on the fence trying to decide whether or not to grab this one (as I was), trust me grab it. you won’t be disappointed.

Brackstar, Dime:

What a gem this is. Incredible sound, well balanced, Jimmy is on fire, Robert is on point, & the band seems to be having a GREAT time. No idea who pressed ‘record’ to save this amazing show to tape, or who released it to the masses, but THANKS!

Nicky19, Dime:

Hello Nakedeye25, I Love this show. It’s a dream come true to have it in this sound quality. Thanks so much for the time and effort you put in. It’s greatly appreciated.
