Captain Beefheart Live in Manchester 1974 : FULL MOON HOT SUN

 CAPTAIN BEEFHEART

and THE TRAGIC BAND

so called

Now I have said (here prolly ) that I have bought and owned as much of Beefheart's output as I could ever find (official and unofficial) and this leads up to and includes the Magic Band on their own and Mallard too, band members separately as well, so am something of a completist, as to the Don Van Vliet creative output (including his paintings)

It therefore comes as no surprise to find I am something of an apologist for the so called ‘tragic’ band formed hurriedly less than a year after I saw the Cap’n and the band in what I consider their finest incarnation the UK tour of ‘73

Don’t get me wrong I appreciate the hardcore fans who HATE this incarnation and I DO get it . . . . I just don’t agree. Quite.

I was such a fan at the time I thought the 'love over gold' time of his romantically trying be more ‘successful', to make more money (sic?) and get hits post the Magic Band leaving him after the depths of his bullying and abuse which all the then band members faced (sic John French and Bill Harkleroad separate published accounts serve as public record) I thought Bluejeans and Moonbeams a delight, Unconditionally hilariously fun, I found Same Old Blues (JJ Cale cover) and that ilk a sheer delight and still do too. The signs were always there that Don would sing about the opposite sex whether in a horny sexual way (Sun Zoom Spark, Big Eyed Beans, Crazy Lil Thing, Long Necked Bottles to My Head is My Only House Unless It Rains, Peaches,  etc)

Here in mitigation I present the band in 1974 in Manchester and with Del Simmons on sax and the band rocking their very best to keep up, I maintain they did their very best to match and back the Captain. You may disagree and you are welcome to but I ask nay plead that you pause a moment and suspend your judgement as we revisit Full Moon Hot Sun!

The poster on YouTube slydogmania says :

Brilliant live footage of Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band in full cry, performing Full Moon in 1974 at Manchester. There are no half-measures here, an outstanding rhythm section laying down solid groove behind Beefheart wailing on harmonica and one out-of-this-world saxophonist. An enigmatic, mysterious and troubled artist, the whole band walked out on Beefheart at some point, but in terms of sheer artistry, this performance provides ample evidence of a legacy characterised by unique greatness.

Frankly I agree!

in addition I add :

Barely a year after we saw them at Oxford Poly 2/05/1973 when it was the classic line up of John, Mark, Bill, Ed (and possibly Orejon on bass who I do not name as he is now a convicted pedophile serving life )

Featuring Del Simmons on sax with a towering solo (IMHO) here . . . .

    • Robert 'Fuzzy' Fuscaldo – guitar
    • Dean Smith – guitar
    • Del Simmons – saxophone; flute
    • Mike Smotherman – keyboards; vocals
    • Paul Uhrig – bass
    • Ty Grimes – drums

Mo’ Birthdays . . . . . David Fincher (‘Fight Club)

Happy Birthday, David Fincher (to the right of Brad Pitt and Edward Norton below)!

David Fincher on "Fight Club" (1999):

"We opened at the Venice film festival, and I think to say they hated it would be an understatement. Let's put it this way: the youngest person in the screening was Giorgio Armani. They called for our hides and we split town. We thought it was funny. Actually, Helena Bonham Carter's mother was three seats down from me and she was just laughing and laughing - she was the only one. She's cool. I'm always surprised at how seriously people take movies. It always surprises me what people get their bowels in an uproar about. It's a movie. It was interesting to me, the critics who felt they had a moral obligation to 'the broader audience' to warn them. But it didn't surprise me that some people didn't think it was funny. It didn't surprise me that some people thought it was morbid. It surprised me, the people who went out of their way to save other people from this experience. I thought that was kind of silly.

It's a cult movie - it's just that it's a big cult. Here's a tricky thing: if you spend $15m, it's not even a pimple on the @ss of that kind of multinational media conglomerate. But if you spend $67m, they gotta release your movie. That's a big number, they can't write it down. I happen to know that the movie's in the black, but there's receipts and there's worth. They are two different things. Because there are movies that make money and there are movies that are worth money, and sometimes the movies that are worth money make money later on. I honestly believe 'Fight Club' is a title 20th Century Fox knows is going to make money for them in perpetuity."

Author Chuck Palahniuk first came up with the idea for the novel after being beaten up on a camping trip when he complained to some nearby campers about the noise of their radio. When he returned to work, he was fascinated to find that nobody would mention or acknowledge his injuries, instead saying such commonplace things as "How was your weekend?" Palahniuk concluded that the reason people reacted this way was because if they asked him what had happened, a degree of personal interaction would be necessary, and his workmates simply didn't care enough to connect with him on a personal level. It was his fascination with this societal 'blocking' which became the foundation for the novel.

After Fincher was finished editing the film, the studio executives were baffled by the piece, and unsure how to market it. Fincher had wanted a highly unique marketing campaign which would mirror the film's theme of anti-commercialism, but already worried about the possible backlash against the film, the Fox executives refused to go ahead with Fincher's idea (two of Fincher's trailers can be found on the DVD in the 'Internet Spots' section). Instead, a campaign was launched which was built largely upon the presence of Brad Pitt in the film, as well as concentrating on the fighting (which plays a minor role in the actual film itself). The campaign was highly criticized as giving the impression that the film was basically just about men beating each other up, completely ignoring the comic and satiric elements of the narrative, and for marketing the film to the wrong audience. David Fincher was particularly incensed when he saw ads for the film during WWE and UFC programming. (IMDb)

Dylan of the Day | FILM NEWS

so what are we thinking . . . . . . ?

never have I seen or heard such a hullabaloo prior to a film coming out! lots of it negative!

Why?

I don’t recall any fuss prior to I'm Not There and that had advance knowledge that he was being played by several people including the force of nature that is Cate Blanchett not to mention Christian Bale, Marcus Carl Franklin, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger and Ben Whishaw!

There is also speculation that is being questioned by fans as to whether it is only being show on ONE day as it is stated ‘only in theatres 25th December' 2024

Go figure as America would have it!

So I'm just doing stuff that I like to do now, because I think that, to me, that was the whole point of being successful, is doing what you want to do. I mean, that was the whole point, yeah."

XTC | THE DUKES OF STRATOSPHEAR “25 O’Clock” 1985 | TWILIGHTZONE

The Dukes Of Stratosphear "25 o'Clock" 1985

“When I was a kid I wanted to be in a group, and that group are The Dukes.”
- Andy Partridge, Swindon. December 1987.

If you are a fan of psychedelic rock then this album is a must have. A very rare find on record, it is worth every second of your time to obtain a copy. I picked up this album sifting through a stack of LP's in an auto bodyshop. Having never heard of the Dukes of Stratosphere and feeling skeptical of the 1985 release date, I finally decided that it was worth the 50 cents to buy out of pure intrigue. (Not to mention the fantastic album art.) So I took it home and gave it a spin. After 30 seconds I was blown away. Opening with the title track,"25 O'Clock", the album blasts off immediately and takes you back to 1967. "Love Explosion" and "Mole from the Ministry" are two more of the six far-out tracks on this oddity of an album. Influenced strongly by late Beatles and very early Pink Floyd, XTC wrote the best music of their careers under the top secret alias, Dukes of Stratosphere. If only more musicians droped acid instead of blowing all of that coke in the 80's; then maybe we wouldn't have all of these Yuppies running about today.
These is a real fun album doing a good impression of psychadelia in rocky/poppy late 1980's sort of way. It is actually XTC behind this. I had it on tape when it came out because I was a huge XTC fan. It was actually a really nice surprise because it is very different from XTC's normal output at the time - which was good too

POPBITCH NEWS!

Over one million people have searched for the name of Oasis’s original drummer in the past 24 hours.

Not quite mad fer it

Rejoice! Liam and Noel Gallagher's mercurial relationship has been mended, just in time for a series of incredibly lucrative gigs next summer and an expensive divorce. What great timing!

Cynical? Us? Perhaps it’s because back in their heyday they stage managed plenty of their bust-up antics too. In the late 90s the warring brothers stormed off stage at a gig in Glasgow, supposedly because someone in the crowd lobbed a bottle of beer at the band.

In fact the whole thing was pre-planned - according to their roadies, it happened because neither brother could actually be arsed to play.

The Gallagher's hard-drinking, sex, drugs and rock'n'roll reputation has been slightly overplayed too. When Noel returned to his hotel in Glasgow that night, staying separately to Liam (because even at this point they couldn't stand the sight of each other) he retreated to the bar for a lime cordial, signing his bill 'Mr Frosty'.

Anyway, best of luck getting tickets.

Trump Arlington Scandal NPR

X, the social media website formerly known as Twitter, stunned observers on Thursday when it posted a warning on links to an NPR story detailing former President Donald Trump's visit to Arlington National Cemetery earlier this week.

wilwheaton:

““Musk/X has slapped a spam/dangerous content warning on this NPR link,” wrote Tom Watson, a professor at the Columbia University School of Professional Studies. “This shows just how damaging this explosive story is to Trump. Let’s get it wide, folks.” “Marking US public broadcaster content as ‘unsafe’ is the sort of revenge move the KGB has fantasized about for decades — and it tells you everything about what Musk and X actually are,” wrote journalist Dave Troy. “Twitter/X is now running a warning that NPR’s story about Trump’s TikTok video at Arlington National Cemetery is a malicious link,” wrote CityLab editor Kriston Capps. “I’ve never seen this once in the thousands of years I’ve spent on this site.””

ART FROM THE FUTURE

For Jobe and the boys faced with this increasing fearful nonsense over there!

More thoughts from Tom (To Waits on Music)

Are sounds as important as songs for you?

Tom Waits:
Always. The surface of a song is important to me, but you can't get away from the fact that you still have to write a song. You can't just rely on the texture or the technique you use to record it. I do like to experiment with all that. What's interesting about working with great engineers is that if you stop by the side of the road and drag something out of the ditch, throw it in the truck and bring it down to the studio, these guys will circle it like it's a moon rock. They'll mic it, hit it with a hammer, and find out the most expeditious way to approach it. Move it around to different parts of the room. They don't make value judgements. They're more like scientists. They get very subjective about the whole issue of sound. But you don't really know when you're going in what you're looking for. Sometimes you find it while you're there.
What does the term punk rock mean to you, if anything? Does it relate to your contrarian nature, or is it just a style of music?
Eventually, all these things become ingredients. Everyone can't wait to take something and bury it so they can dig it up later. Everything seems to go through that process. It's all a big Salvation Army of style. And it's all still available at all times for everyone to enjoy on whatever level as a main course or as an appetiser. Punk rock is more about the posture and the politics and the attitude, and being as iconoclastic as you possibly can. There's a band on the label, NOFX, who were getting played on the radio, and they were livid. They said, "We'll get our lawyers down here. Get that record off the radio!" And they did, they got it off the air.
Would you do the same?
I don't know, it's not my thing. I kinda like hearing myself on the radio. It's happened once or twice, and I liked it. I've been trying for 25 years to get on the radio in some form or another, so I'm a bit of a different challenge. But I salute it. I salute diversity and standing up for what you believe in, living your life the way you want to live it. It's a good place for me to be. I don't know what it means, except that [Epitaph is] trying to branch out a little bit. If you're only selling napkins and tableware, you're going to have to diversify at a certain point.

Mind you lest we forget

Something of a tortured (over indulged?) soul, the accounts of his private life leave me hugely conflicted about him and whether in fact he is a monster or not; from the ‘relationship’ with his daughter (sic) Mackenzie (who most, I will allow, other family members do not believe in the ten years plus abusive relationship but many others did including her sister Chynna and Denny Doherty’s daughter) to the account of his heroin addiction (where is it published, in what book, the account of his ending up shooting up every fifteen minutes?!) I am not so sure we should celebrate the accident of his birth but hey an ‘interesting’ pop Svengali figure for sure! An Eric Gill of his times . . . . . .possibly?
