The Sahel is a region that stretches across Africa and lies just below the sahara. It encompasses parts of a lot of countries- and is more united by geography than by national boundaries.
The electric guitar got adopted in this region pretty early on. There are similarities to the kora and other African stringed instruments - so that with some adjustments, the same or similar musical styles could be adopted on this amplified instrument. Some claim this is the blues returning to the source, but of course everything changes as it moves from place to place. The lyrics can sometimes be political (as there are plenty of conflicts in the region), and the playing is mind blowing and virtuosic. -David Byrne
