It was Paul Simon’s 7th solo album, made during one of the most difficult periods of his life: his relationship with Art Garfunkel had dissolved, so too had his marriage to actress Carrie Fischer, and his 6th album, “Hearts and Bones” had the lowest sales of his career. Simon flew to Johannesburg to record for two weeks and flew some of the great musicians he met there to New York City to complete his 7th record. “Graceland” would become Simon’s best-selling record of his career (16 million copies), earning him a Grammy for Album and Song of the Year.
