Ringo Starr's All-Star Band performing "The Weight".Founded in 1989, this live rock supergroup is built around a rotating lineup with Ringo Starr as the sole constant - the idea being "everybody on stage is a star in their own right." Starr formed it after getting sober alongside wife Barbara Bach, wanting to get back on the road before recording a new album; he'd booked himself from July to September 1989 for what became his first tour since The Beatles.The original 1989 lineup was stacked: Joe Walsh, E-Streeters Clarence Clemons and Nils Lofgren, former Band members Rick Danko and Levon Helm, Dr. John, Billy Preston, and Jim Keltner.Danko and Helm brought The Band's songbook into the set and when Garth Hudson joined as a guest on accordion, the entire surviving lineup of The Band was on stage together. One of the standout moments was "The Weight," sung with Levon Helm and Dr. John trading verses.The tour led to Starr's first live album, Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band, released in 1990 - his first release of new material in seven years. The concept proved durable - Starr has since toured with fourteen different All-Starr lineups.
