Mighty Sparrow, one of its defining voices and greatest storytellers, died on September 27 at the age of 91.
The Slave is a remarkable piece of calypso storytelling, with Sparrow’s voice becoming increasingly forceful as the song unfolds.
It’s also the song Bob Marley reportedly cited as a major inspiration for his own music.
