Jason Isbell - Capitol Theatre, Port Chester, NY, 5-20-2015 | Albums That Should Exist [+ John Prine, and Amanda Shires 2016]

Jason Isbell - Capitol Theatre, Port Chester, NY, 5-20-2015

One thing I like about posting albums from the April 2026 Capitol Theatre, Port Chester soundboard leak is that it forces me to discover music that I previously never heard. This is a good case in point. This is a concert by singer-songwriter Jason Isbell with his backing band, the 400 Unit. I'd heard good things about him, but I'd never really heard his music. Now I have, and I was impressed. Maybe you will be as well.

Here's the into to his Wikipedia entry:

"Michael Jason Isbell is an American singer-songwriter. Considered one of the best contemporary songwriters in his genre, he is known for his honest, emotional lyrics. Isbell began his career as a member of Drive-By Truckers for six years, from 2001 to 2007. His first album with his backing band, the 400 Unit, was released in 2009.

"In 2013, Isbell released his solo commercial breakthrough, 'Southeastern,' which debuted at No. 23 on the Billboard 200 and appeared on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The album was later certified gold. Southeastern also featured his signature song, 'Cover Me Up,' which won Song of the Year at the Americana Music Honors & Awards. ... Isbell has earned praise from artists such as John Mayer, Bruce Springsteen, David Crosby, and Zach Bryan. He has won six Grammy Awards out of ten nominations."

This concert took place a couple of months prior to the release of his 2015 album "Something More Than Free." So there are some songs from that one. All the songs are written by Isbell except the last one, a cover of Neil Young's "Like a Hurricane."

Like most music from this leak, I had to work with a single mono audio file. So I chopped that into individual mp3s. Other than that, I didn't have problems here. The one alteration I made is boosting the volume of the applause at the ends of songs when I could. It wasn't super low, like it is sometimes with soundboards, but it did benefit from getting boosted.

This album is two hours and two minutes long.
