Speedy says:

1970s - #1: On November 30, 1972, Led Zeppelin launched a 25 date tour of the UK, which ran until January 30, 1973, their first shows in their home country in just about a year. The original 110,000 tickets, priced a £1, sold out within four hours of the box offices opening on November 10. This run of shows holds an interesting place in Led Zeppelin's history for several reasons. First, it was the last full fledged tour of the UK by the band. The only subsequent shows that they would play in England prior to John Bonham’s death in 1980 would be 5 nights at Earl’s Court in 1975 and 2 performances at Knebworth on 1979. Second, the tour would also be the last time that the band played small venues, such as the 1800 seat New Theatre in Oxford. The arena/stadium era would commence for Led Zep right after these shows. Finally, this tour was supposed to have produced the first Led Zep live album, however, the band eventually decided to use the Madison Square Garden performances later that year for the disc The Song Remains The Same. This soundboard recording from January 7, 1973, 53 years ago today, captures Led Zep on in Oxford, about ½ way through the tour.

Now I said to Speedy that this one is a home town sesh that I just missed by going away to college that very year (Oxford being where I lived) and the venue is well known to me and frankly is tiny for the boys! They must have blown the roof off! I have had this before back in 2023 as ‘Oxford Blues’ (geddit?) it’s a rowing joke! . . . . . . but not sure if its soundboard quality I will let you all know! . . . . .turns out both seem to be the soundboard but if you don’t have it it is well worth having - VERY GOOD QUALITY and definitely a soundboard . . . it how we rolled in the ’Shire on a Sunday night!

My first proper gig at New Theatre, Andy. My sister had taken me to see The Beach Boys two years earlier, but this was THE ONE. Took an early lunchbreak from my job at Blackwells on Hythe Bridge St, thinking there won't be many wanting tickets for this one. Needless to say I spent 2.5 hrs queing for the tickets, and got a rollicking from my boss. If memory serves me correctly, they were late on the night (I think caused by train delay), but they were awesome. Loud. But awesome. I remember when they opened up with R&R, the whole place erupted. Epic stuff. Thanks for the memories DD

OMG! I swear we were closer than we both think! I ran Blackwell’s Art & Poster Shop for eleven years on Broad Street!!! Loads of good pals at the Main Shop one of whom dear friend who still visits here regularly!! Loved mixing with the guys at HQ by the station! [Head of HR saved my life!] P.S. Robert even mentions the lateness of the trains which I didn’t quite get but the band arrived BY TRAIN?!
