I Can See You - by Paddy Summerfield c. 1986

Finally from Floppy Boot Stomp this week comes a fine set that I thought I had for a moment there of David Bowie in Budapest from 1997 but it turns out to be a different set entirely and is an astonishing Bowie document if you don't already have it! I love the Reeves Gabrels lineup and David is just at his peak here

B ★ O ★ W ★ I ★ E

Silent Way at FBS also posts a brilliant video of Bowie covering the Brecht song made popular so long ago by The Doors of 'Alabama Song' (Whiskey Bar)' Live Berlin 2002 TV-SAT1

"and when I was living in my apartment in Berlin I would sing this at breakfast every morning"

The concert here is made available in MP3 format and it has a really nicely designed booklet with it too. It is just frankly a scorcher!

Steve Earle & The Dukes

- Solano Beach, CA.USA. 2000 -

This is genuinely broadcast quality again a real peach of a set from Voodoo Wagon and these guys can always be relied upon to turn up with the goods in terms of quality recordings in FLAC format* and yet the performance is interesting merely and rowdy and a tad rough around the edges!   I am not sure if Steve was in sobriety around 19 years ago but it doesn't sound it at times and this can result in a mixed performance! It is well worth checking for the period and the quality of recording alone. If you like your Earle sets rough and ready then this is for you! He covers all the bases and classics the audience expect who sounds as rough n rowdy as anyone!!

JACK BRUCE BAND

LIVE 1975

Some great new posting from the brotherhood of blogs (I LIKE that!) of Floppy Boot Stomp and Voodoo Wagon in the past
few days and we start with a peach from the Jack Bruce Band from 1975 at TheManchester Free Trade Hall with Carla Bley and Mick Taylor on guitar. It is simply breathtaking quality and is available here in FLAC format quality so especially fine. (N.B. If you want to convert FLAC files I use All2MP3 or Easy Tree [here] or if you don't like these I find online converter quite handy  Online Converter

Floppy Boot Stomp says:

LIVE '75 is a recording made on the legendary Jack Bruce Band tour of that year. With a band featuring former Rolling Stone Mick Taylor on guitar, Jazz icon Carla Bley on keyboards, Ronnie Leahy on piano and organ and Bruce Gary on drums, this release captures the band at the peak of their powers at a concert in Manchester's Free Trade Hall on June 1st 1975. Featuring dramatically extended versions of classic Jack Bruce compositions such as 'Morning Story', 'Keep it Down', 'Smiles and Grins' and two lengthy medleys of 'Tickets to Waterfalls / Weird of Hermiston / Post War' and 'One / You Burned the Tables on Me', the live set also featured Tony Williams' composition 'Spirit' and the Cream classic 'Sunshine of Your Love'.

It was an official release but is long out of print now and exchanges hands for over $60 a pop so I post the link here

ON THIS DAY IN MUSIC

September 28th

1965 - The Rolling Stones
The Rolling Stones played the first of two nights at the Capitol Theatre, Cardiff, Wales. During the 1960s The Capitol Theatre saw all the major acts of the era performing here including The Beatles and The Kinks.

1968 - Paul McCartney
The Beatles started a nine week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Hey Jude'. The Paul McCartney song written about John Lennon's son Julian gave the group their 16th US No.1 and the biggest selling single of 1968. In 1996, Julian paid £25,000 for the recording notes to the song at an auction. Paul always seemed especially close to his best friend's son and John always appreciated this. I think it's called brotherly love and Paul was always in touch with his fatherly instincts and emotional intelligence where children were concerned treating them with fondness and like little adults which is of course what they are!

1974 - Bad Company
Bad Company went to No.1 on the US album chart with their self-titled debut album recorded at Headley Grange, Hampshire in Ronnie Lane's Mobile Studio.. Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke had come out of Free while Mick Ralphs had played guitar with Mott The Hoople and Boz Burrell was bass player for King Crimson before the group formed in 1973. They produced six albums together before disbanding in 1983.

1976 - Stevie Wonder
Stevie Wonder released his eighteenth studio album Songs in the Key of Life, an ambitious double LP with a four-song bonus EP. It debuted at No.1 on the Billboard Chart on October 8, 1976, becoming only the third album in history to achieve that feat and the first by an American artist.

1976 - George Harrison
A&M Records sued George Harrison for $6 million over non-delivery of a new album after he missed the deadline by two months.

1980 - The Police
The Police were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Don't Stand So Close To Me' the group's third No.1. Taken from their album 'Zenyatta Mondatta' and the best selling single of 1980.

1985 - Kate Bush
Kate Bush scored her second UK No.1 album with 'Hounds Of Love'. The singers second No.1 album featured the tracks 'Running Up That Hill', 'Cloudbusting', 'Hounds of Love' and 'The Big Sky'.

1991 - Miles Davis
American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer Miles Davis died of a stroke and pneumonia. His 1959 album 'Kind of Blue', is a major influence on jazz music. Davis is considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.

2002 - Tina Turner

Tina Turner's hometown, made famous in her song ‘Nutbush City Limits,’ named a stretch of State Highway 19 the ‘Tina Turner Highway.’ Turner lived in Nutbush, a small town about 50 miles northeast of Memphis, until she was 17.

2009 - John Lennon "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds"
Lucy Vodden, the childhood pal of John Lennon's son Julian, passed away at the age of 46 after losing her battle with auto-immune disease lupus. She was the inspiration for The Beatles track 'Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds', written mostly by John after Julian showed his father a nursery school drawing he called Lucy - in the sky with diamonds, depicting his classmate.

2010 - The Beatles
Souvenir hunters were being condemned for "wanton vandalism" after sections of masonry were hacked off the house of Ringo Starr's birthplace. Fans who were campaigning to halt town hall plans to demolish 9 Madryn Street, found that chunks of brickwork had been removed from the house.

BIRTHDAYS

1946 - Helen Shapiro
Helen Shapiro, UK Singer, (1961 UK No.1 single 'Walking Back To Happiness'). Whoop-i whoa yeah yeah!

1902 - Ed Sullivan
Ed Sullivan, TV host, The Ed Sullivan Singers and Orchestra. Introduced The Beatles and other UK acts to America via his Ed Sullivan TV show. The Beatles appearance on February 9th 1964 is considered a milestone in American pop culture; the broadcast drew an estimated 73 million viewers. Sullivan died on 13th October 1974. Sullivan always freaked me out rather being the most extraordinary looking man in some respects. The archetypal American suit TV presenter and ineffably 'straight' his show featured some of the greatest freak bands of the 60's in particular.

wonder what Ed made of the Airplane?!

so it's not alright to spend the night together . . . . . .

but later we can let it bleed!

Thanks to On This Day In Music

THE DOORS

and of course we have had this before as a post but 'Strange Days'  and the inexpressible excitement I experienced when this album came out I have mentioned before . I was shocked, transported and finally felt someone was singing to me! But this post from the wonderful Behind The Grooves is a track rarely featured so worth it just for that and to underline how much Jeff over at Behind The Grooves would appreciate our support (see below)

On this day in music history: September 25, 1967 - “Strange Days”, the second album by The Doors is released. Produced by Paul A. Rothchild, it is recorded at Sunset Sound Recorders in Hollywood, CA from May - August 1967. With their debut album finally taking off with the release of “Light My Fire” the same month, The Doors begin recording the follow up.This time, the band have more advanced technology at the their disposal, recording on an eight track multi-track tape machine. They also have one of the first Moog synthesizers built to experiment with. Having previously covered Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s “Alabama Song (Whisky Bar)”, many of the songs on “Strange Days” have a darker and moodier feel like that German cabaret song. That feel is most apparent in the first single “People Are Strange” (#12 Pop), though many of the songs were written at the same time as their debut and represents what they have in reserve. Those songs include “Moonlight Drive”, based on a poem written by Jim Morrison and “My Eyes Have Seen You”. The cover photos are taken by photographer Joel Brodsky, though do not feature The Doors themselves. Instead it uses a group of street performers including a strong man, a musician, a juggler, acrobats and twin dwarfs (seen individually on the front and back), in an alley way. With these type of performers hard to come by even in New York, a cab driver is paid $5 to participate in the photo shoot, with Brodsky’s assistant standing in as the juggler. The Doors themselves are represented on the cover in the form of a poster on the alley wall. In spite of this, Elektra Records affixes a sticker to the shrink wrap to make it more easily identifiable as a Doors album. Released only nine and a half months after their debut, “Strange Days” starts off strong but quickly loses momentum and sells considerably less. It spins off two singles including “Love Me Two Times” (#25 Pop), with “When The Music’s Over” also becoming an airplay favorite. Issued with both dedicated mono and stereo mixes, part of the original press run of mono LP jackets are printed in error with the stereo LP prefix “EKS” on the sleeve spine instead of “EKL” as indicated on the front and back. Originally issued on CD in 1985, it is remastered and reissued in 1999, and is reissued again for its fortieth anniversary in 2007 with new remixes. The album is also reissued as a 180 gram vinyl LP by Rhino Records in 2009. “Strange Days” is also issued with 5.1 surround remixes (and the original stereo mixes) as a hybrid SACD by Analogue Productions in 2013. The mono mix of the album, out of print since 1968, is reissued as 180 gram vinyl LP on Record Store Day in April of 2015, individually numbered and limited to 12,500 copies. “Strange Days” peaks at number three on the Billboard Top 200, and is certified Platinum in the US by the RIAA.

Forgot to post this t'other day . . . . . remember the excellent Jeff Harris over at Behind The Grooves one of the grooviest (it's a word!) weblog sites out there and he would appreciate our support (see below)

On this day in music history: September 26, 1995 - “Outside”, the nineteenth album by David Bowie is released. Produced by David Bowie, Brian Eno and David Richards, it is recorded at Mountain Studios in Montreux, Switzerland from Late 1994 - Early 1995.  David Bowie reconnects with his former collaborator Brian Eno when Bowie marries Somalian supermodel Iman in 1992. At the wedding, Bowie and Eno talk about working together again (for the first time since “Lodger” in 1979), but at first is unsure what musical direction they will take. Unlike their previous projects, they enter the studio without any material prepared ahead of time.  What they come up with is a concept album based on a short story by Bowie entitled “The Diary of Nathan Adler” which revolves around a dystopian world on the eve of the twenty first century.Bowie and Eno write many of the albums songs along with Tin Machine guitarist Reeves Gabrels.  It spins off three singles including “Hallo Spaceboy” and “The Hearts Filthy Lesson” (#92 Pop), the latter of which is heard over the end credits of David Fincher’s film “Se7en”. “Outside” peaks at number twenty one on the Billboard Top 200.

ON THIS DAY IN MUSIC

N.B sorry about the sequencing something went wrong with the HTML code on th last two posts so they overlapped and I am such an amateur I could fix it [who ARE you talking to? ED] I know nobody cares or has even noticed but hey, it's my bug and I couldn't fix it, watcha gonna do?

September 27th

1967 - The Beatles
Working on new songs The Beatles recorded various parts for the new John Lennon song ‘I Am the Walrus’, and the new Paul McCartney song ‘Fool On The Hill.’ Lennon received a letter from a pupil at Quarry Bank High School, that mentioned an English teacher was making his class analyse Beatles' lyrics. Lennon, amused that a teacher was putting so much effort into understanding the Beatles' lyrics, decided to write in his next song the most confusing lyrics that he could.

1968 - Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd appeared at the Queen's Hall in Dunoon, Scotland. Due to bad weather, all the ferries to Dunoon were cancelled, so Pink Floyd hired their own boat from Gourock and risked the rough seas to make the crossing, eventually appearing in front of 400 fans.

1972 - Rory Storm
Rory Storm singer from UK 60s group Rory Storm and the Hurricanes died aged 32 after taking an overdose of sleeping pills in a suicide pact with his mother. Ringo Starr played drums with Storm before joining The Beatles.

Rory and his Mum

1979 - Jimmy McCullough
Scottish guitarist Jimmy McCullough died from a heroin overdose in his flat in Maida Vale, London, aged 26. Member of Stone The Crows, Thunderclap Newman and Wings (1974 to 1977). When 'Something in the Air' by Thunderclap Newman went to No.1 in 1969, it made McCulloch the youngest guitarist to ever play on a UK No.1 single, as he was was just sixteen years old at the time. Tragic loss,  great little guitarist and did some of his most genuine work with Wings

1980 - David Bowie
David Bowie scored his fourth UK No.1 album with his fourteenth studio album Scary Monsters (And Supercreeps). The album featured the singles 'Ashes to Ashes' and 'Fashion'.

1986 - The Beatles
The Beatles track 'Twist and Shout' re-entered the US singles chart over twenty-five years after it first appeared, after the song was featured in the film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I think Twist & Shout EP was the first Beatles I bought myself. My brother bought the first few albums and with my pocket money I wanted to join in. Never looked back

2000 - Jerry Hall
Thieves broke into Jerry Hall's Richmond home and stole jewellery worth £7000 and a laptop computer. Two of Jerry's children were asleep at the time while the ex Mrs Jagger was on stage appearing in the West End Show, The Graduate. Ex girlfriend of Bryan Ferry and putative 'wife' to Mick Jagger and now married to Australian news mogul Rupert Murdoch, what can she see in such folk??

The price of love? Turns out quite a lot . . . . . .
2003 - Kylie Minogue

Kylie Minogue called in police to investigate a series of threatening letters. The singer became concerned after receiving 700 letters at her home and office. The letters started as ordinary fan mail but became increasingly aggressive.
Can't imagine how you end up with weirdos stalking and tracking you!

2004 - Phil Spector
Legendary record producer Phil Spector was formally charged with murder in the February 3rd, 2003 shooting of actress Lana Clarkson. He was convicted in April, 2009 and sentenced to 19 years to life in the California State prison system.

2008 - Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd's manager Bryan Morrison died after spending over two years in a coma. Morrison suffered severe brain injuries in a polo accident at the Royal Berkshire Polo Club, England in 2006, and never recovered. He also managed The Pretty Things and was a music publisher for Syd Barrett, The Bee Gees, Elton John, The Jam T-Rex and Wham!

2011 - Tony Bennett
Tony Bennett became the oldest living person to top the US album chart when the 85-year-old's 'Duets II' album went to No.1. The record, which featured collaborations with Amy Winehouse and Lady Gaga, was also his first US No.1 in his 60 year career. The previous oldest performer to top the chart was Bob Dylan in 2009 with 'Together Through Life'. At the time he was 67-years old.

2018 - Marty Balin
American singer, songwriter Marty Balin died at the age of 76. He was best known as the founder and one of the lead singers of Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship who had the 1967 US No.18 single 'White Rabbit'. Balin played with Jefferson Airplane at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and at the Woodstock Festival in 1969.

BIRTHDAYS

1984 - Avril Lavigne
Avril Lavigne, Canadian singer, (2002 US & UK No.3 single 'Complicated', 2002 US No.2 & UK No.1 album 'Let Go', 2007 worldwide No.1 single 'Girlfriend'). Lavigne is the youngest female to top the charts aged 17 years and 3 months. I didn't really GET the young Canadian with that youngster grunge skater girl schtick but enjoyed a couple of early singles and then wonder where she went . . . . . . . .

1953 - Robbie Shakespeare
Robbie Shakespeare, session bass player, as Sly and Robbie worked with Peter Tosh, Robert Palmer, Jimmy Cliff, Grace Jones, Joe Cocker, oh yeah and Bob Dylan (1987 UK No.12 single 'Boops, Here To Go').

1947 - Meat Loaf

American musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, and actor Meat Loaf (Marvin Lee Aday). His record breaking 1978 album Bat Out Of Hell spent 457 weeks on the UK album chart. His Bat Out of Hell trilogy of albums (consisting of Bat Out of Hell, Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell, and Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose) has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide. Meat Loaf has also appeared in over 50 movies and television shows. I like Meatloaf well I like the Marvin Lee Day behind the Meatloaf . . . . I loved his work in Fight Club and thought he always had a great sense of humour but his music leaves me stone cold dead in the market!!

Fight Club

1947 - Barbara Dickson
Barbara Dickson, singer, actress, 1985 UK No.1 single with Elaine Paige, 'I Know Him So Well').
I always enjoyed Barbara's work and though she sang mostly from the musical theatre canon I always thought her voice belonged in folk but hey if you want to make a career with Mike Battv and the dreadful Andrew Lloyd-Weber than so be it. . . . .she was gorgeous too!

1944 - Alvin Stardust (Shane Fenton)

Shane Fenton, (Alvin Stardust), UK singer, 1974 UK No.1 single 'Jealous Mind', plus 10 other UK Top 40 singles). Stardust died on 23 October 2014. He also married the actress and infuriatingly nice Liza Goddard

No Shane NO! Don't do that . . . . .
