THE ANIMALS - Before We Were So Rudely Interrupted (1977) Remastered 2000 | Plain & Fancy

Cut 11 years after the Animals' original lineup recorded their last LP and six years before their more well-remembered reunion tour, this oft-overlooked album is just short of a lost classic; it lacks the intensity of their 1983 studio effort, Ark, but it is more substantial musically than that album and fits in very neatly with their preceding work, as though they'd scarcely skipped a beat. Recorded under the auspices of the late Chas Chandler's Barn Productions, the album was highlighted by a dramatically bluesy rendition of "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," boasting superb playing by Alan Price.

Hilton Valentine's soaring guitar pyrotechnics light up "Fire on the Sun," perhaps the flashiest performance of his career for this most introspective of '60s British blues axemen, and "As the Crow Flies" has the group returning to its roots, as a dark, brooding rendition of the Jimmy Reed song that gives room for Chandler, Valentine, Price, and John Steel to show off their '60s-era blues chops in a more expansive form. After a promising start, the gospel number "Many Rivers to Cross" falls apart a bit, but "Just a Little Bit," with its rippling organ break, the group original "Riverside County," and the pounding finale, "The Fool," make the rest of side two eminently enjoyable, although, coming out in the midst of the punk and disco booms, the LP never had a chance to be heard by more than the most dedicated fans.

John Hammond And The Nighthawks - Hot Tracks (1979) - Plain & Fancy

Next we have a great set from the legendary John Hammond and The Nighthawks over at Plain & Fancy. I always feel I should post more John Hammond because as blues men go he is up there with John Mayall and Alexis Korner in terms of bringing the essence of black music to a white audience IMHO and man this man can PLAY!

Despite one of the worst album covers of all time this is really worth listing to! The notes as per at Rockasteria are always interesting and this is no exception with a lesson in the sources of these song selections and well worth the read. This time from Bruce Eder.
He says:
" . . . .  this isn't a bad way to spend 40 minutes, especially given the really crunchy guitar sound achieved by Jeff Zaraya and the uncredited producer. A real diamond in the rough, and one of Hammond's best albums."
Musicians
John Hammond - Vocals, Guitar, Harmonica
Jimmy Thackery - Guitar
Marc Wenner - Mouth Harp
Jan Zukowski - Bass
Pete Ragusa - Drums

Enjoy! I know I am!

* note - though only published in 1979 on CD this is seemingly out of print and not available anywhere I could find. If you know otherwise then please let me know otherwise and I will remove it

The Flatlanders - More A Legend Than A Band (1972 feat. Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock) - Plain & Fancy

This is nice . . .  not as rip roaring as Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock fans might have expected from live recordings and that leaves the title somewhat ironic as this is scarcely a legendary performance but it IS highly enjoyable and perfectly listenable. I am unlike the enthusiast who writes the liner note review here [Brendan McGrath, April 23rd, 2007] on Rockasteria but it's . . . . . well, nice! Good call Marios!

In fairness I played it straight the way through and will play it again for sure but I am a Joe Ely and Butch Hancock and Jimmie Dale fan and this doesn't somehow quite match up to their separate work or certainly their live appearances but that's so true of so many bands. . . . . It is FINE! Have a listen and leave a comment saying you disagree!  ha ha ha ha . . . . . . .

Enjoy!

Colosseum - Live '71 - Plain & Fancy

I saw Colosseum several times in the early seventies mostly at open air festivals and the like, also the following incarnations like the Keef Hartley Band and Jon Hiseman's many incarnations and at this time they were at the peak of their progressive jazz rock fusion. So it is really nice to see and read the entry on Rockasteria of the live album remastered from 1971. It's really worth a listen and a read as ever the introductory historic text is always worth a good read.

Four track special and whilst slim it is worth having tho' maybe not up to the San Francisco set from Voodoo Wagon

OGS says:

Legendary rock band Pink Floyd has quietly released a treasure trove of 12 live albums on streaming services. The band hasn’t publicly commented on the recordings, all of which document its early ‘70s golden age period.

On Dec. 10, a commenter on a Pink Floyd fan site first posted about the recordings being dropped. All of the albums boast a copyright of Pink Floyd Music Ltd. It’s possible the British band is taking a similar strategy from artists like the Beach Boys, Beatles, and Bob Dylan - all of whom have issued collections as a form of copyright protection, adhering to a 2011 change in European law.

A rep for Sony told Rolling Stone back in 2013, “The copyright law in Europe was recently extended from 50 to 70 years for everything recorded in 1963 and beyond. With everything before that, there's a new 'Use It or Lose It' provision. It basically said, 'If you haven't used the recordings in the first 50 years, you aren't going to get any more.’”

To give an example of the provision: in 2012, Bob Dylan released a collection of limited-edition outtakes from 1962. If he had waited to release the collection, his recordings would have become public domain. Therefore, Dylan's label pressed roughly 100 copies and distributed them to stores in France, Germany, Sweden, and the U.K.

Pink Floyd likely released the EP 1965: Their First Recordings in 2015 because of the "Use It or Lose It" provision as well. The recordings later resurfaced in the band’s Early Years box set.

All of the concerts from Pink Floyd's new live albums occurred between 1970 and 1972. During that period, the band released: Atom Heart Mother (1970), Meddle (1971), and Obscured by Clouds (1972). Since the band began playing songs from Dark Side of the Moon prior to its release, one recording - a March 1972 Tokyo gig - features a near-complete performance of that LP in sequence.

KEVIN COYNE - 4 Disc ANTHOLOGY - Plain & Fancy text by John Dougan

 KEVIN COYNE

Great 4 disc anthology set review from Plain & Fancy this morning . . . . . . . . and so I post this as my single of the day

the only single I ever bought by Mr Kevin Coyne! It's got a great sunshiny feel to it

The albums? . . .  well, that's an entirely different matter . . . . most somewhere in the gulags (oh, that text predict for "vaults" was weird so I left it - Coyne would have found it funny I think), there down in the vaults . . . . . are most albums

as ever with Rocksteria a fascinating biographic article here from John Dougan

SUNDAY MORNING SUNRISE!

Many singer/songwriters have been more heralded, but few produced more good work or did so for longer than Kevin Coyne. While virtually unknown in America, Coyne released dozens of records, most of them very good, that dealt primarily with outsiders: men, women, and children arbitrarily shunted to the fringes of society, or worse, locked away and left alone. His songs could be extraordinarily compassionate and, in the blink of an eye,  angry, anguished and accusatory. Perhaps the most durable and telling image of Kevin Coyne is the cover photo of his album In Living Black & White. On the front, Coyne is smiling and politely bowing to an unseen audience; the back of the album jacket is the same photo taken from the rear, with Coyne clutching an open straight razor.

Born in Derby, England, in 1944, Coyne, like many rock &roll performers who came of age in early postwar Britain, was an art schoolstudent who fell in love with American R&B. Living a bohemian life in late-'60s London, Coyne was employed for a while as a socio-therapist for alcoholics and the emotionally disturbed, jobs that would profoundly affect his approach to music. In 1969 his first band, Siren, signed to influential BBC DJJohn Peel's specialty label, Dandelion. Two years and two excellent records later, Peel dissolved his label and Coyne embarked on a solo career. Married with two children, Coyne supported both his family and musical career by returning to social work. In many ways, his solo debut, Case History, set the tone for his career. Based on his social work experiences, it was a riveting examination of the desperate search for love by those forcibly exiled to the fringes of society. With his bluesy voice wailing almost inconsolably, Case History is a naked examination of people (Coyne included) whose lives are inconstant turmoil: betrayed, institutionalised, unwanted, and mostly unloved. The characters in these songs cry out for attention, and Coyne, never one to buy into England's bureaucratic social work system, howls right along with them.

Case History was very nearly Coyne's swan song, but after a self-imposed exile from music, an opportunity to continue recording as a solo act with almost complete artistic freedom proved too powerful an incentive. In1973, Coyne began a relationship with the then-fledgling Virgin Records label, which seemed willing to embrace the decidedly noncommercial, difficult performer. For the next eight years, he recorded some of his best music and, somewhat surprisingly, attained a modicum of commercial success, albeit in Europe only. These were mostly edgy folk-rock records tinged with an avant-garde feel for performance art (Coyne was a published poet, too), clearly not easy listening by any stretch of the imagination; neither were these records overly pretentious nor unapproachable.

By the early '80s, Coyne was recording for independent labels, making frustrating, semi-successful records that were erratically released and difficult to find. Exacerbating this bad situation were his worsening mental and physical states: chronic depression culminating in a 'nervous breakdown' and alcoholism that, along with ending his marriage, nearly ended his life. In 1985 he moved to Nuremberg, Germany and began to pick up the pieces, improving his health and forming the Paradise Band. The move also re-sparked his passion for painting and writing, resulting in a handful of published books along with well-received exhibitions of his visual work in the cities of Berlin, Amsterdam, and Zurich. By the time the '90s rolled around, Coyne had re-established himself as a true underground force, releasing a continuous stream of albums of dizzying variety (and availability). In 2002 he was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. He died at his home on December 2, 2004. He was 60
