Talking Heads Redo, plus New Editing Technology
Note that before I continue with posting 1982 US Festival albums, I wanted to make a major change. After posting the albums from the festival that I did, I was contacted by MZ, who has long helped me with this blog. He said he had a better version of the Talking Heads set, a soundboard. I listened to it, and I'm convinced it's not a soundboard. But it does sound significantly better than the version I'd just posted.
So I decided to completely redo that album, using that new source. I had to process all the songs twice (again). First, I improved the mix of the lead vocals compared to the instruments with the UVR5 program. Then I got rid of nearly all the crowd noise during songs (a key indicator that it's an audience boot, by the way), while keeping the cheering at the ends of songs, using the MSVEP program.
Thus, if you've downloaded this album already, I suggest you download it again. The sound quality difference is significant. Plus, this source had the full version of the last song, instead of only half of it. I've updated all the links in that post, which is right below this one.
And by the way, speaking of the MSVEP audio editing program, I've noticed recently that it's gotten even better. It can split all kinds of things that it couldn't before, and that I wasn't aware of any other programs doing. So, for instance, it can separate out just the guitar parts of songs. (For some reason, all these types of programs have had a hard time with that.) It can also split out just strings, just wind instruments, just backing vocals, and more. Plus, the program is free to use. So if you have any ideas for albums that could use improvements, please let me know. For instance, maybe there's an album where strings were added all over the place in a way that was very misguided. Now, we, the listeners, have the ability to fix things like that! I think that's pretty great. Paul ATSE
