Remembering the great Steve Cropper (October 21, 1941 – December 3, 2025) | Don's Tunes

Cropper played on just about every record made at Stax in the 1960s, his guitar licks adding sinew and grit to a body of songs that created the template for Southern soul music and which continue to influence generations of musicians to this day.
“We didn’t really have music when I was growing up because there was no electricity,” he said. “All you’d hear on the radio was stuff like (How Much Is) That Doggie in the Window? But when we moved to Memphis, I found a gospel station on the radio and never looked back. I ended up playing soul and R&B. But it’s that same rhythm. It just makes you move.”
More than a brilliant guitarist, Cropper acted as engineer, producer, songwriter and A&R man responsible for finding new talent. Among his discoveries was Otis Redding, who turned up at Stax one day in 1962 working as a chauffeur for the blues artist Johnny Jenkins.
Cropper went on not only to produce or play on all of Redding’s greatest recordings but co-write several of his best-known songs, including Mr Pitiful and (Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay.
Known among his fellow musicians as “the Colonel” — he claimed he never knew why, although he had served as a captain in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps — he was named by the music magazine Mojo in 1996 as the world’s second greatest guitarist after Jimi Hendrix.

Remembering Garth Hudson (August 2, 1937 – January 21, 2025)

A multi-instrumentalist, a key element in the recordings and arrangements that defined The Band as essential forebears of the Americana genre, and a man with a distinctly large physical presence, he also happened to be the only member of the group who didn’t contribute vocals. Content to reside in the background, he was equally reticent to do interviews.
“It was a job,” Hudson once of his said of his efforts with The Band in a 2002 interview with the Canadian magazine Maclean’s. “Play a stadium, play a theater. My job was to provide arrangements with pads underneath, pads and fills behind good poets. Same poems every night.”
That statement offered yet another example of the understated honesty and humility with which Hudson approached his work. His bandmate Levon Helm once told producer John Simon that “The Band wouldn’t be The Band without him.”
Simon, who produced The Band’s early efforts, once said in an interview with the Toronto Star, that Hudson was the “wild card” that made Music From Big Pink a favorite of such superstars as Eric Clapton and George Harrison.“Garth was essentially a colourist,” he continued. “He had an incredible palette.”

Sly And The Family Stone: SLY STONE (March 15, 1943 – June 9, 2025) | URBANASPIRINES (3 Albums)

Sly And The Family Stone: SLY STONE (March 15, 1943 – June 9, 2025): Life 1968 + Stand! 1969 + There's A Riot Going On 1971

This from Kostas at URBANASPIRINES

Sylvester Stewart (March 15, 1943 – June 9, 2025), better known by his stage name Sly Stone, was an American musician, songwriter, and record producer who was most famous for his role as frontman for Sly and the Family Stone, playing a critical role in the development of funk with his pioneering fusion of soul, rock, psychedelia, and gospel in the 1960s and 1970s. AllMusic stated that "James Brown may have invented funk, but Sly Stone perfected it," and credited him with "creating a series of euphoric yet politically charged records that proved a massive influence on artists of all musical and cultural backgrounds."

Sly and the Family Stone was an American funk band formed in San Francisco, California in 1966 and active until 1983. They are considered to be pivotal in the development of funk, soul, R&B, rock, and psychedelic music.
