"Another gem from Daniel Kachamba: a demonstration of the technique he called “Putugizi” featuring a right hand circular motion while the thumb and index strike the strings in a rumba rhythm. What Daniel called “high lumba” due to the speed of the music. The style may have originated in Mozambique. (“Putugizi” referring to “Portuguese”).

Recorded in 1972 at a film institute in Göttingen, Germany in collaboration with ethnomusicologist Gerhard Kubik / University of Vienna.”Gary Lucas

Now we have established Gary really knows his stuff and I am not just saying that as his taste so frequently crosses mine own but I mean REALLY knows his early blues and music ever since as well! I didn’t know these two and it warmed my cockles (it’s allowed!)

 Andrew Baxter (born 1869) played the fiddle, while his son Jim Baxter (born 1898) played the guitar and sang. The duo hailed from Gordon County, Georgia.They recorded notable sides for Victor Records in Charlotte, North Carolina (1927–1928) and Atlanta, Georgia (1929). Their music, such as “Georgia Stomp” and “Forty Drops,” was later featured on Harry Smith’s influential Anthology of American Folk Music.

Green Onions - Booker T and The MGs (how it came about - Gary Lucas)

Booker T. & the MG’s performing “Green Onions” Live in ’67

“Green Onions” was born out of dead time at Stax Records. 

In 1962, Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Lewie Steinberg and Al Jackson Jr. found themselves with time to fill during a recording session for singer Bill Lee Riley. They recorded an instrumental called “Behave Yourself” with Jones on Hammond M3 organ. Stax co-founder Jim Stewart liked it enough to consider releasing it, but they needed another song for the other side of the single. Booker T. remembered a riff he had been playing on piano and moved it onto the Hammond. The band worked around it, keeping the arrangement spare and letting the groove carry almost everything. Jones holds the centre with the organ riff, Cropper answers with clipped guitar phrases, while Steinberg and Jackson keep the rhythm section locked underneath them. That second recording became “Green Onions.”

The musicians behind it were also becoming the core house band at Stax, playing on records by many of the singers who would define the label’s sound. “Green Onions” gave them a record of their own, built from the same economy and rhythmic discipline they brought to those sessions.

Gary Lucas posted this on his Facebook page and noted they "got stiffed" for the gig which surprises me as a previous Student Union member and aware of how seriously most took their responsibilities for the pay for artists to appear. I asked Gary if indeed it was the union but I hoped not . . . unless anyone out there knows better or otherwise? see his response below

An original concert poster for the Captain Beefheart performance at the Loughborough Student Union on the 15th November 1980.

The poster measures 50.5cm x 76.5cm (19.8 inches x 30.1 inches). There are two holes measuring 2.8cm x 1.8cm and 2cm x 1.9cm to the centre of the poster with several tears on each which have been repaired from the reverse with tape. The condition is very good minus.

Wouldn’t that have been the Student Union? Seems unlikely to be stiffed by them?! What were the circumstances! Someone else responsible for booking you? I am stunned and terribly disappointed if it was the Union!

Is that the gig where you gave a reading Gary? I found a YouTube of it earlier. It seems it was a fascinating gig! May I add, I am SO sorry on behalf of all U.K. fans and the N.U.S that Virgin had to chase payments, not my personal experience of the standing of Unions in Oxford, Witney or Leicester where we booked loads of bands way back when! Pretty sure the N.U.S would have come down hard on Loughborough if they hadn’t duly paid what was owed.
