Happy 80th birthday this past week 🎂 to John Sebastian March 17, 1944 [80]

Happy 80th birthday this past week 🎂 to John Benson "B" Sebastian born March 17, 1944 in Greenwich Village, New York City, New York, United States.

He is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, harmonicist, and autoharpist. He is best known as a founder of the Lovin' Spoonful, as well as for his impromptu appearance at the Woodstock festival.

After Santana’s magnificent Saturday afternoon set, there was a bit of a lull before the next act could begin, so lighting coordinator and de facto emcee Chip Monck asked his friend John Sebastian, who was attending Woodstock purely as a spectator, to see if he would go on stage and play a few songs. Sebastian tried to refuse, but Chip insisted, so he borrowed a guitar from Tim Hardin (a Harmony like mine and why I started a small collection of same!) and he walked into the breach to create another memorable Woodstock moment.

Younger Generation

John Sebastian performed at the Woodstock Festival on Saturday afternoon, August 16, 1969 from 3:30–4:00 PM.

John was one of only three performers to take the stage at Woodstock with no other supporting musicians. The other two were Melanie, and Country Joe McDonald.

John B and Friend in the studio!

They hung out for the longest time and around the time of scooting around on Bob’s motorbike (there are many shots of them looning around together at this time) but I always wondered why they didn’t seem to end up closer?

John and Bob enjoyed riding Bob's motorbike on which he would have his accident [July 29, 1966] and indeed there are many photos of them riding around on it and they remained friends

Sebastian had cause to play Woodstock by happenstance realising there was a gap as bands changed stage set up someone asked if he could cover! Not even having a guitar he asked someone to borrow a little Harmony and the rest is history! Soon everything turned to tie dye! (thanks largely to Catherine Sebastian)
