Speedy dropped by to add comment on the Morrison from FLOPPY BOOT STOMP’s THE BOSS from The Bottom Line NY November ’78 and added links to his own sourced ROIOs which are uniformly excellent and well worth having (or re-visiting!) posted back in 2019 they are frankly Van Morrison in his absolute prime!

SPEEDY SAYS :

I've seen Van Morrison 7 times, across 3 decades - the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s - and each time has been unique. Van changes up the set list from tour to tour, and you never know what mood he'll be in for a concert. For example, his September 1990 show at the Garden State Art's Center was a contemplative, introspective performance. In contrast, his April 1992 concert at the Paramount in New York was an upbeat religious celebration. Then again, his 1989 show at The Beacon Theatre was a bluesy affair, with a guest appearance by John Lee Hooker. With Van, you never quite know what you'll be seeing or hearing, which is part of the fun. In any event, my wife and I are hoping that one day will get to see him play Some One Like You, as that's our wedding song.

Today's post goes back to well before I ever saw Van Morrison live, to his fabled comeback tour in 1978.  After releasing 6 albums between 1970 to 1974, Van took 3 years off, not releasing another album until 1977’s aptly named “A Period Of Transition”, a collaboration with Doctor John. Van’s real return; however, came in the spring of 1978, when he released Wavelength, which at the time became the fastest selling album of his career. Most critics also praised the disc, with Time magazine, for example, stating that “Wavelength is good enough to stand close by Morrison's best work, a record of sinuous, sensuous magic. The man just can't be beat.” Perhaps energized by his new album, Van took to the road in the fall of 1978, playing a host of shows at small intimate theaters, such as his November 1 shows at The Bottom Line in New York, 41 years ago today. This FM broadcast captures the both the early and late show in their entirety, with Van in complete control of an enraptured audience.  Download these 2 shows, then stop back on November 4 for another one from this tour from +Van The Man.  By the way, I've included multiple sources for both the early and late shows in the download folder.

On October 3, 2000, Paul Simon rleased his 10th solo studio album, The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2001, making Simon the first artist to be nominated in that category in five consecutive decades (1960s-2000s). In 2006, Paul McCartney became the only other artist to match that feat when his disc Chaos and Creation in the Backyard was nominated. The album went to #19 on the US Billboard charts and to #20 on the UK charts. This soundboard recording captures Simon on tour in support of You're The One, at the beacon Theater on December 2, 2000.

Dylan of The Day - RAY PADGETT’s Flagging Down The Double E’s Newsletter - NY Power outage!

Greeting Fans During a Blackout

2003-08-20, Hammerstein Ballroom, New York, NY

On August 14, 2003, Bob Dylan played New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom.

Well, almost. He was supposed to play New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom. His third show in a row in the small club. But, sometime around soundcheck, the power went out.

Not just at the club. The whole city. In fact, a big chunk of the Eastern seaboard and Canada lost power. The Department of Energy calls it “the worst power blackout in history.”

There are plenty of news clips you can watch if you don’t remember this, but my favorite artifact of this moment this Conan O’Brien episode taped using a generator and the few staff members who stuck around, wearing headlamps.

The power went out at 4:15 pm. Since the Hammerstein gig was a general-admission club show, a number of Dylan fans were already in line. And who should come out to check on them but the man himself? The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported:

Outside the Hammerstein Ballroom, a concert hall on 34th Street, a group of diehard fans of Bob Dylan were waiting for a second day. They had arrived at 5 a.m. Thursday for a Dylan concert that was canceled that night. They were hoping it would be held Friday night.

They were rewarded for their persistence when Dylan himself stopped by Thursday night to chat.

“He just came walking up and said, ‘So what do you want to ask me?’” marveled Mike Amrein of Simsbury, Conn. “Somebody asked, ‘Who dresses you?’ And Dylan said, ‘My wife,’” Amrein said.

“I come to his concerts quite often, and this was absolutely not my first night on the sidewalk,” Amrein said.

Sadly, this was just before ubiquitous camera phones or I’m sure there would be more visual evidence of this extremely un-Boblike behavior. But I found one photo of Dylan visiting with the line out on the street:

Some posts in old fan forums add detail. One poster notes that Dylan bailed pretty quickly when one crazy lady started asking him questions like “Can I give you a makeover?” and “Were you breastfed?” And you wonder with Dylan doesn’t spend more time hanging out with his fans

LED ZEPPELIN [Eelgrass, 3CD] Live at Madison Square Garden, New York, NY; June 7, 1977. - Big O

Led Zeppelin Madison Square Gardens 1977 - Big O

Oh you wanted it LOUD!

Breathtakingly good quality Led Zeppelin from Big O yesterday and you better download it now or it won’t be there long (7 days only!) . . . . it exists in various formats over the years and known widely as Magical Sound Boogie but the guys here have tinkered and tweaked it back up to maximum quality. Grab it now and turn it RIGHT UP to 11

The notes from Dime clear this up

Thanks to nakedeye25 for the remaster and for sharing the show at Dime.

nakedeye25 noted:

This is Zep’s first show of a six-show run at MSG in New York in 1977. The original release is the EVSD “Magical Sound Boogie”, which is a soundboard release of the show. For this remaster I used RipX to separate the original tracks into four wav stems each (Bass, Drums, Other, Vocal).

While it is not a perfect sound separation, it does a surprisingly good job at it. The good part is it does a nice job of separating out the bass, drums and vocals. The tricky part is it combines the keyboards, acoustic guitars, and electric guitars into one track. So please don’t confuse this with a muti-track mixdown…

Having said all that, I believe the results are good enough to share with the community. The original tape cuts are still there. No Quarter has a slight cut in it. Most of the end of Black Country Woman is missing as is the beginning of the next song Bron-Y-Aur Stomp. There is also a slight cut in Over The Top. I have applied some EQ to this recording as well. I also fixed some volume issues in places throughout the show. The tracks are now set up to run as one continuous show.

pp25texas, Dime:

this sounds amazing to my ears. just about melted my speakers down to IN MY TIME OF DYING on the drive into work today. many, many thanks to the people responsible for making this recording and remaster happen. if you are on the fence trying to decide whether or not to grab this one (as I was), trust me grab it. you won’t be disappointed.

Brackstar, Dime:

What a gem this is. Incredible sound, well balanced, Jimmy is on fire, Robert is on point, & the band seems to be having a GREAT time. No idea who pressed ‘record’ to save this amazing show to tape, or who released it to the masses, but THANKS!

Nicky19, Dime:

Hello Nakedeye25, I Love this show. It’s a dream come true to have it in this sound quality. Thanks so much for the time and effort you put in. It’s greatly appreciated.

Lou - Dirty Boulevard
the anthem for Trump World and America's response to the immigrant situation as seen and retold by the great urban poet, Lou Reed. Also another bought when it came out. Still reel from this album it is one of the last I purchased and played over and over again we all used to do. Strawman to Romeo and Juliet to Dirty Boulevard every track a gem and a unique burst of creativity. Tight band too

Turn it up!
