David Bowie was part of the 1996 Rock Hall Of Fame class, which also included Gladys Knight and the Pips, Jefferson Airplane, Little Willie John, Pink Floyd, Pete Seeger, The Shirelles and The Velvet Underground. David Byrne of the Talking Heads presented Bowie for induction. Bowie, wasn’t in the building, however, as he was in Helsinki, Finland, touring in support of his album, Outside. Madonna accepted on his behalf, and Marianne Faithful performed Rebel Rebel.  Stevie Ray Vaughn was elected in 2015, along with his band Double Trouble. Other inductees that year included Lou Reed, Bill Withers, Joan Jett and Ringo Starr.

This post goes back 13 years earlier to Bowie's tour in support of the Let's Dance album, when he teamed up with Vaughn. While attending the 1982 Montreux Jazz Festival, Bowie was impressed by a then unknown blues guitarist by the name of Stevie Ray Vaughan. So much so, that Bowie invited Vaughan to play on his next album. That disc, entitled, Let’s Dance, would blend a dance format with blues guitar rock to create a distinctive and unique sound. The public loved it, as the album went to #4 on the US Billboard charts and climbed all the way to the top spot in the UK. The album yielded 3 top 15 singles in the US, Modern Love at #14, China Girl at #10 and the title track which reached #1. When Bowie went on tour in support of the album, however, SRV could not accompany him due to contractual issues. This soundboard recording captures the tour rehearsals in Dallas on April 27, 1983, 3 decades ago today. Download this one to hear the unique partnership of David Bowie and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

"The Kinks entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, the first year they were eligible.  Other members of that class included The Who, Simon & Garfunkel, The Four Tops, The Four Seasons, and Bobbby Darin, just to name a few.

This soundboard recording captures The Kinks at the Rockpalast on April 4, 1982, 44 years ago today, during their 2nd wave of popularity. The band's 1977 album Sleepwalker climbed to #21 on the Billboard chart in the US, with the title track and the tune Juke Box Music becoming staples on FM radio. Around the same time, new wave acts such as The Pretenders and The Jam recorded covers of Stop Your Sobbing and David Watts, bringing the Kink's music to a whole new audience. A cover by Van Halen of You Really Got Me also sparked renewed interest in the Kink's music. Then in 1979, The Kink's released the album Low Budget, which climbed to #11 on the Billboard charts. Their next album Give The People What They want, released in late 1981, went to #15 on the Billboard charts, continuing the band's string of chart success. By the way, The Kinks were on the same bill as Van Morrison, who's Rockpalast appearance we posted earlier today."

Van "The Man" Morrison was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1993, along with Cream, The Doors, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Sly & The Family Stone, just to name a few.  The ever reclusive and unpredictable Mr, Morrison skipped the ceremony, having Robbie Robertson accept the honor on his behalf, while the Counting Crows were recruited to play Caravan.  

This soundboard recording features Van Morrison from The Rockpalast on April 4, 1982, 44 years ago this very day. An interesting note is that the concert actually started a 11 pm on April 3 with a set from Rick James. Van came on second, starting his performance at 1:00 am in the morning on April 4 and he would be followed by the Kinks, whose set we'll bring you a little later today! This show took place about 2 months after Van released the album Beautiful Vision, a disc which has met which mixed critical reviews over the years. For example, while Robert Christgau gave the disc a grade of A-, reviewer John Milward called it “emphatically half-great.” Opinions about the disc are so divided that Rolling Stone magazine has flipped flopped its opinion of Beautiful Vision over the years. When it first debuted, they gave the disc a 4 out of 5 rating. However, years later, they ranked it as one of the “15 worst albums by great bands.” Personally, I’m huge fan of the album and of songs such as Dweller On The Threshold, Cleaning Windows, Northern Muse, She Gives Me Religion and the title track.

Speedy says: 2000s - #7: As long time readers of So Many Roads Know, one of my favorite musicians is Marshall Crenshaw. Crenshaw is so under rated that he makes John Hiatt, whose lack of attention I have frequently mourned, look like Mr Popularity. Crenshaw was born in Detroit, MI but got his big break in New York, when he played John Lennon in the off Broadway production, Beatlemania. While in New York, he recorded Someday, Someway, a song that Robert Gordon covered and took to #76 on the Billboard charts in 1981. Crenshaw released his version the next year, which went to #36 in the charts, his only top 40 single. Crenshaw’s first 2 albums are must owns for every rock fan. Famed critic Robert Christgau summed those 2 discs up in one simple word - PERFECT. This soundboard recording captures Crenshaw, in Philadelphia on March 30, 2002, 2 dozen years ago today.

and that’ll do for me! Ever a fan of John Hiatt and agreeing wholeheartedly with Speedy about his lack of attention (especially in the UK? sic!?) I have to admit I know little to nothing about Crenhshaw and have heard of him but he did not travel well into the UK (Europe?) so give this a listen folks

Paul says: "I'm back with another volume of Marshall Crenshaw performing cover songs. This is the sixth volume so far, and there are still three more to go to get caught up to the present day (as I write this at the end of 2023).

By now, if you know the other volumes in this series, you should know the drill. As usual, I'm struck by the breadth and depth of Crenshaw's musical tastes. He performed a fair number of classic, well known songs here, but also some obscurities. For instance, "When I'm Cleaning Windows" dates to the 1930s, and was considered so racy that the BBC banned it for a while.

All but four songs are unreleased. Those four that are released happen to the the first four. One is from an Aerosmith tribute album, and two more are from a Nick Lowe tribute album.

The fourth released one, "Walk Away Renee," is from an official Crenshaw live album. Ironically, this one had more sound issues than most of the unreleased songs. While the song itself sounded fine, there was some annoying laughing and cheering over the music, including in the middle of the song. So I used UVR5 to wipe that out while keeping the music. Because I did a lot of that, I put "[Edit]" in the title. I also removed cheering from most of the other songs, but just at the end. There were a couple where it was too problematic to remove though. "When I'm Cleaning Windows" also has "[Edit]" in the title. If I remember correctly, that's because he stopped in the middle of song when he forgot how it went. I edited out that mistake."

1960s - #6: On March 22, 1965, Bob Dylan released his 5th studio album, entitled Bringing It All Back Home. The disc would climb to #6 on the Billboard charts in the US, makling it Dylan's first top 10 album in the states. Across the pond, the album would go to the top of the British charts. With tunes such as Mr. Tambourine Man, Subterranean Homesick Blues, It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue, It’s Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), and Maggie's Farm, the album would eventually be considered one of rock's masterpieces, with Rolling Stone ranking it #31 on its 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. This FM broadcast captures Dylan 5 days after the release of Bringing It All Back Home, in Santa Monica on March 27, 1965, 61 years ago today.

Pretty damn good for the period 1965! WE have this down in the vaults but if anyone hasn’t heard it check it out at so many roads - tell Speedy I said ‘Hi!'

1990s - #1: On March 4, 1990, David Bowie embarked on his Sound & Vision tour,  a run of shows built upon an unusual premise. The set list for the tour would feature a host of his greatest hits, which Bowie would then retire from all future concert performances. For fans, it would supposedly be their last opportunity to hear classics such as Suffragette City, Ziggy Stardust, Rebel Rebel and Changes, just to name a few, in concert. Fortunately, Bowie didn’t completely abandon his old material in future tours, but at the time no one was quite certain how serious he was about the claim. This soundboard recording captures Bowie on  the 2nd night of the tour, in Montreal, on March 6, 1990, 3 dozen years ago today.

-I saw Michael Hedges perform with CSN at, of all places, the United Nations back in 1989. Dude did stuff with the guitar -- ACOUSTIC guitar -- he could get the strangest, most original sounds -- organically -- out of the instrument. If I knew what genius was, I'd guess he was one.

-It was broadcast live on WKRQ in New York with Michael Hedges opening for CSN. It was one of the most incredible concerts I have ever listened to. 

-I was at this concert back in 1989, when CSN performed at the UN. That was a historic event and I agree one of the best concerts ever. All the incredible energy that is present in the General Assembly Hall combined with the live music created an unforgettable event.

Speedy notes: 1990s - #5: On September 21, 1999, David Bowie released his 22nd studio album, entitled Hours. He launched a short promotional tour in support of the disc, consisting mostly of television and small club appearance.  This soundboard recording captures him during that run, at the Kit Kat Klub in New York, on November 19, 1999, 26 years ago today.

Now we have shared ROIOs of David at New York’s Kit Kat Klub 1999 before and it should show up in the links but as Speedy includes the five tracks from Later with Jools I don’t think my previous versions had that so you pays your money and takes your pick (oh, that’s right you don’t pay Jack do ya!?)

After two decades, the U.S. ban on travel to and from Cuba was lifted, creating new diplomatic and cultural exchange opportunities. Sensing the time was right, CBS Records, in conjunction with the U.S. State Department, staged an international coup by organising an unprecedented three-night series of concerts in the Cuban capital of Havana. 

Dubbed "Havana Jam," this historic cultural exchange took place on March 2, 3 and 4, 1979 at the 4800-seat Karl Marx Theater and marked the first time American musicians had performed in Cuba since the Castro regime gained power two decades prior.

The King Biscuit Flower Hour accompanied a plane full of Columbia Records artists as they participated in this first comprehensive music festival held in Cuba, which featured an all-star cast of musicians from a wide range of musical genres. In addition to Cuban artists, performers included Weather Report (with Jaco Pastorius); Stephen Stills (who had been experimenting with Latin music his entire career); Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge; John McLaughlin (famed Mahavishnu Orchestra guitarist) performing a one-off trio gig with Tony Williams and Jaco Pastorius; the CBS Records Jazz Allstars, which featured a wealth of jazz greats including the Heath Brothers, Stan Getz, and Dexter Gordon, in addition to the final night headliner Billy Joel. Unfortunately Billy's set at Havana Jam was not recorded or videotaped. 

The King Biscuit Flower Hour would nationally broadcast various material from these historic concerts, most of which has never been officially released.
