Alien addressed . . . .

"Alien" opened in American cinemas on May 25, 1979. The film had no formal premiere, yet moviegoers lined up for blocks to see it at Grauman's Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood where a number of models, sets, and props were displayed outside to promote it during its first run. Religious zealots set fire to the model of the space jockey, believing it to be the work of the devil.

An initial screening of "Alien" for 20th Century Fox representatives in St. Louis was marred by poor sound. A subsequent screening in a newer theater in Dallas went significantly better, eliciting genuine fright from the audience. Two theatrical trailers were shown to the public. The first consisted of rapidly changing still images set to some of Jerry Goldsmith's electronic music from "Logan's Run" (1976).

Ridley Scott: "I've never liked horror films before, because in the end it's always been a man in a rubber suit. Well, there's one way to deal with that. The most important thing in a film of this type is not what you see, but the effect of what you think you saw."

Scott chose not to show the full Alien for most of the film, keeping most of its body in shadow in order to create a sense of terror and heighten suspense. The audience could thus project their own fears into imagining what the rest of the creature might look like: "Every movement is going to be very slow, very graceful, and the Alien will alter shape so you never really know exactly what he looks like." Scott said. Roger Ebert remarked that "'Alien' uses a tricky device to keep the alien fresh throughout the movie: It evolves the nature and appearance of the creature, so we never know quite what it looks like or what it can do."

The Alien has been referred to as one of the most iconic movie monsters in film history, and its biomechanical appearance and sexual overtones have been frequently noted. Dan O'Bannon, who wrote the film's screenplay, has argued that the "facehugger" scene is a metaphor for the male fear of penetration, and that the "oral invasion" of Kane by the facehugger functions as "payback" for the many horror films in which sexually vulnerable women are attacked by male monsters. O'Bannon later described the sexual imagery in "Alien" as overt and intentional: "One thing that people are all disturbed about is sex... I said 'That's how I'm going to attack the audience; I'm going to attack them sexually. And I'm not going to go after the women in the audience, I'm going to attack the men. I am going to put in every image I can think of to make the men in the audience cross their legs. Homosexual oral rape, birth. The thing lays its eggs down your throat, the whole number.'" Happy 75th birthday to the great Ry Cooder!

"Rock as it is known today just doesn’t interest me at all,” said Ry Cooder to The Guardian in 2011. “I hate commercial music. If I hear that money in it, all that winking and nodding… It kills me.”
“People tried to teach me to read the page and understand theory,” he once said. “I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t be taught. I think there was something about me that resisted being taught anything.I didn’t like school, I didn’t like the teachers, I didn’t like the whole set-up. I wanted to do it myself. So I found that I could. The only thing is – it takes longer. If you’re going to go on your own, it’s going to take you awhile."

The Harry Dean Stanton Award Show

Harry Dean Stanton & Mariachi Los Reyes perform at the Harry Dean Stanton Award Show on October 23, 2016.
Vidiots’ first “Harry Dean Stanton Award” tribute took place at the Theatre at Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles on October 23, 2016. The show was produced by Vidiots Foundation, Harper Simon, Leslie Wilson, Logan Sparks, Sophie Huber, and Laila Nabulsi to benefit Vidiots. The show’s epic House Band was led by Harper Simon and included musicians John Densmore (The Doors) on Djembe and tambourine and Carla Azar, Paz Lenchantin, Benji Lysaght, and Will Canzoneri. The show was shot and edited by Vidiots friend and supporter Garrett Sutton.

HARRY DEAN STANTON

On of my all time heroes and actor in so many of my favourite films (Missouri Breaks, Repo Man, Two Lane BlackTop, The Last Temptation of Christ, Wild At Heart, Alien, Paris,Texas, Inland Empire, The Straight Story, Seven Psychopaths, The Godfather Part II, Green Mile, Cool Hand Luke, One From The Heart. And two Bob Dylan films; Renaldo & Clara and Pat Garret and Billy The Kid, to name but a few, Harry Dean Stanton has passed away at 91.
Now THAT is a life lived fully!

This interview always stayed with me:
“I’m 87 years old…I only eat so I can smoke and stay alive.. The only fear I have is how long consciousness is gonna hang on after my body goes. I just hope there’s nothing. Like there was before I was born. I’m not really into religion, they’re all macrocosms of the ego. When man began to think he was a separate person with a separate soul, it created a violent situation. The void, the concept of nothingness, is terrifying to most people on the planet. And I get anxiety attacks myself. I know the fear of that void. You have to learn to die before you die. You give up, surrender to the void, to nothingness.
Everyone wants an answer. I think it was Gertrude Stein who wrote, ‘There is no answer, there never was an answer, there’ll never be an answer. That’s the answer.’ It’s a hard sell, but that’s the ultimate truth.
Anybody else you’ve interviewed bring these things up? Hang on, I gotta take this call….. Hey, brother. That’s great, man. Yeah, I’m being interviewed… We’re talking about nothing. I’ve got him well-steeped in nothing right now. He’s stopped asking questions.”
