GRAHAM NORTON SEASON WRAP - Winslet, Blanchett, Lester, Dua Lipa and Justin Timberlake [Feb 2024]

How lovely is this lass?

Last night saw the wrap of the latest season of The Graham Norton Show which I still enjoy and the line up was fascinating in Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett [a favourite actor], Adrian Lester (another favourite actor) Dua Lipa and Justin Timberlake as the guest singer

Now I have long admired Dua Lipa’s singing and ever since seeing (hearing) her on the BBC Live Lounge thought HECK! This Girl Can SING! I have noted that I am not her target audience being a crotchety old geezer but the over sexualisation of young women artists concerns me (Arianna GrandĂ©, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Billie Eillish to a degree and Dua Lipa is not averse to strutting her stripped down stuff but I have seen visuals from some stage shows that look more like the sex shows of the sixties than pop or rock shows (I Blame Madonna!), I read something recently that described Rita Ora as the ‘former singer' (sic?! what is she now a nude fashion model? - wherefore billionaire Rihanna? Then there’s the BeyoncĂ© phenomena that if and I say IF it is about empowering women to express themselves then all well and good but it LOOKS just like the old sexism, run by the patriarchy to tittilate and arouse - if it is not than it ought to be clearer! Otherwise we still end up deeply concerned over Jay-Zee's new wife and partner being controlled to appear almost naked at every given opportunity (it’s called abuse!) Just a concern. I just want to hear these gals SING! Despite her self effacing genuine humility [she seemed genuinely in awe of Winslet and Blanchett], she comes across as a delightful person too!

See what I mean? Blimey! Dua Lipa shows off!

It turns out she is a breathtakingly beautiful intelligent, bright as a button, young woman and can hold her own with the best. Starting her music career by returning from her native Kosovo to London at 15 on her own (sort of) and clearly impressing all those who heard her. When asked how she managed to pull that off with her parents who now seem to try to accompany her wherever she goes and her siblings too out of term time, she said “ I am kind of hard to refuse!” No doubts from me! She now organises a festival in Kosovo and has attracted headliners  - Miley Cyrus no less -  and to spread the word about her country!

Adrian Lester was there to advertise his appearance in the new Sally Wainwright who has gone all JK Rowling and written a fantasy piece with sprites and magic that looks genuinely fun and fab! Sally wrote 'Happy Valley' and is known for her gritty Northern dramas so this is going to be fun to see her shift gears a tad. He also can throw a mean nun chuck it seems being a 4th dan “not very good’ exponent of Tai Kwon Do! Looked like the real deal to me!

The Crates (Blanche and “Winslet" as they seem to refer to each other!?!) were there to add some fun and advertise new projects but it was Dua Lipa who took my breath away and not ONLY for the reasons you’re thinking!

Much fun all round fun!
 Timberlake? As I admire him as a person/actor also but his music is not aimed at me either so . . . . . . . . . meh!?

The girls seem to talk about weeing  . . . . a lot! I blame Graham!

But Adrian showed how it’s really done! He ain’t messing . . . . .

SELF ESTEEM ON GRAHAM NORTON SHOW 17th October 2022

I know it was a while ago now but largely because I said I would and I always try to keep my promises here is Self Esteem [Rebecca Lucy Taylor, 36] singing her new single 'F***ing Wizardry"! I loved this version and the lighting and the band and especially the outfits . . . . . . . . !

St Vincent - Daddy's Home

 ST. VINCENT

I think I first came across Annie Clark known more widely as St Vincent through David Byrne

of course she looked kinda weird . . . . . .

and then saw her on Graham Norton show over here where she introduced herself wearing red plastic 'sexy' gear and claimed she had invented a guitar . . . . . being lighter to carry it would seem . . . . . .

and I found her interesting and something of a chameleon which is an artistic idea that has always appealed from The Doors and Jim Morrison 'Changeling' to David Bowie presenting differing persona

Then I saw here latest album and something about the title made me feel uncomfortable

and her almost unrecognisable!

but then last night I found someone had posted these images of her from earlier . . . . . . .

and she is clearly very beautiful and enjoys the Bowiesque changeling type persona with make-up, hair dye and photoshop (see Byrne collaboration)

I like her!

LEWIS CAPALDI

I saw Lewis Capaldi on Graham Norton last night and sometimes we just want him to do SO well. Hoping he isn't going to just be a one hit wonder after 'Someone You Loved' which is so exceptionally fine . . . on this evidence alone he is going to be around for some time to come . . . . .

The new single is extraordinary and here is the evidence. The intensity of emotion in this young man's voice is so moving, a blues for the 21stC and he has a gift of nature in his ability to sing in this way. Perfect pitch I imagine and I am not sure anyone appreciates really how difficult singing like this actually is. Especially when the music can be so sparse. Staggering piece of work and as the post interview clearly shows and young man with a finely tuned sense of humour.
We LOVE Lewis round our way!

WEIRD CRUSHES OF THE WEEK!

The gals can be nerdy and have weird crushes too it would seem. . . . . .

Quotes of the week for me were Bebe Roxha (so ultra cool) flirting with Johnny Vegas on the Easter Special Celebrity Juice. She seemed completely enchanted, literally, if a tad bemused also by Johnny and he of course made everyone laugh (he was dressed as a rabbit) and Bebe confessed she liked him and clearly is fascinated by men who can make her laugh but she also seemed mesmerised and had clearly never met anyone quite like him, (who has!?) adding
 'I could really have a thing for you, . . .  I like you and er, . . .  I'm just not entirely certain whether I'm safe or not'! !!  !

The place collapsed! I like her and she taught everyone to twerk . . . for which she seemed very well . . . .er, equipped!

They showed her video which she said her mum and her granny would tell her off as they hadn't even seen (it IS quite steamy!!! ahem)though quite whether her Gran and her Mum would or should have been watching Celebrity Juice is another question. It IS my guilty pleasure and my children despair of me!! Ha ha ha ha ha  . . . . . . I say!Go Johnny!

Staring straight at Johnny
This look says it all to me . . . what exactly IS that!?

It's a Johnny Vegas!!

Twerk that stuff! I'm not sure she's safe either!

Mind you I think Will Mellor was pleased and after all it was his birthday!!

Phew! Is it warm in here?

The line up on Graham Norton was great and the music was from 'Mabel' (Neneh Cherry's daughter! They don't come any cooler) who Graham made confess she was a massive Harry Potter fan!! And came over all unnecessary when sitting next to Daniel who had just been showing off his new film's Lego Playmobil character another figurine to add to his collection. (Yep he collects them and had Playmobil make a Graham Norton one! Geeks!) so Mabel had to mock fan herself down as she sat next to Daniel and they immediately hit it off as 'Harry' tested how much of a fan she was. Watching all the films doesn't count. She had read ALL of the books and then he asked her which house she would be in, quick as a flash she retorted she had mulled it over for years and when she was little wanted to be in Hufflepuff and then Gryffindor of course she said and finally decided on Ravenclaw! Hilarious! Way to prove you're a nerd methinks!!!

Daniel loved it of course . . .  he again was very self deprecatingly funny and when responding to Americans who hear the British accent say they think he should be James Bond he says "oh no, no NO! That is so wrong!" but now he is a Playmobil 'James Bond' he thinks he has found his true metier!!!! The clip from the film looked really good, funny too . . . .

Mabel

She confesses! Mind you as the only man on the sofa with these four!!???

       Still can't get over Jodie's broad Scouse accent . . . . .

Ravenclaw you say?!

Fabulous!
