Squeeze - Wrong Again (Let’s Face It) (1979)

‘Guess' say:"This frantic pop gem was released as a free green flexi-disc with Smash Hits magazine. Cool acoustic guitar solo. You might recognize this from Rockpile’s fine cover version."

Squeeze Live Chicago 6-30-80 | A Jobe Re-Boot! FLOPPY BOOT STOMP

 Squeeze Live Chicago 6-30-80

A brother Jobe re-boot

Jobe notes:
"Everything is so pessimistic these days, and if the bottom can fall
out it will any minute now.
What with having to worry about, stupid and repetitive jobs,
having enough money to survive,
how many followers I have on facetweet, etc. But I have come up
with a way to become optimistic in our everyday lives....
wait for it.....STUDY THE TEACHINGS OF MIKE LOVE.
That's right Mike Love. Mike is the most happiest-go-lucky f
ellow I've seen.
Have you ever seen this guy dance? He makes Mick look like Michael Jackson.
Do you think it bother's him at all that
he is the epitome of no rhythm white man?
Not at all. Do you think it bother's him at all suing his cousin for writing credits about
cheeseburgers and sodas? Not at all.
Do you think it bother's him that he is not relevant?
Not at all. Do you think it bother's him that he damn near had Dennis killed?
Not at all. Everytime I see this guy he's smiling and telling us the benefit's of TM.

As a matter of fact I'm going to start my mantra right now.................................
OK I'm back.
So the next time you feel like you're  the last sheet of toilet paper on the roll
and the world has diarrhoea let the teachings of Mr. Love soothe your troubled mine.
No covers. Songs.           (With a nod to Andy) “

😊 That’s me!?

Aww shucks we like a Squeeze don’t we?

Squeeze - Live At The Ritz 1988 | Voodoo Wagon | Jobe

 SQUEEZE

(guest DR JOHN!)

This great and we have posted quite a good bit of SQUEEZE before and they meant a lot to me. Jools has gone on to media and music related stardom via his TV programmes (Later . . . with Jools etc) and has the most eclectic taste in music and is widely acknowledged as one of the nicest men on the scene. Yet Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook are frequently underestimated a songwriters. I consider them the Lennon & McCarney of the Eighties! Yes really! Also Tilbrook is one of the most underrated guitarist you may ever hear! They played the Ritz in New York frequently over the years and this is a full 92 minute set. It guest stars Jools’ great hero and inspiration Dr John on Mac’s Such a Night. Dr John appreciated the support from Jools and found a kindred spirit in someone who could play the keys as well as he could (sic!)
This is fab quality and download it if you don’t have it!

Tilbrook and Difford

Thanks Brother Jobe!

Did they part on good terms? Check this!

Squeeze - 1993-11-19 - Sausalito, CA (FM) - So Many Roads

SQUEEZE - Third Rail - On LATER with Jools Holland 1993

Nice one from draftervoi (so the notes say!) via so many roads today and whilst it is billed as SQUEEZE it is really a studio session with Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford only but none the worse for that.

This is the year of one of my very favourite Squeeze albums 'Some Fantastic Place' but this is by way of a radio interview session around that time and you will want to pick through the tracks after first listens I imagine and thus it isn't the complete album and misses off some of my favourite songs from that era not least the title track (sic!) [presumably these will show up on the next volume advertised for 22 Nov]

Still it is high quality and really worth a listen . . . .watch this space for the next session!

So Many Roads says -
Squeeze 1993 - Same Tour, Different Show Double Play - #1: In September 1991, Squeeze released their 10th studio album, entitled Some Fantastic Place. The disc featured the return of Paul Carrack, who last appeared on their 1981 album, East Side Story. The disc did not reach the top 100 in the USA, though critical reviews were mostly positive, This FM broadcast captures Squeeze on tour in support of Some Fantastic Place in Sausalito CA on November 19, 1991, 31 years ago today. Download this one, then come back on  November 22 for the 2nd half of this Same Tour, Different Show Double Play (see below)

Tempted? Give us a SQUEEZE! - VOODOO WAGON

 SQUEEZE!

Live in LA 2010

Voodoo Wagon

This is a peach and as Jobe says on the site give it a chance as an audience recording as it's better than many soundboards actually. Squeeze, as I have said here before, are an excellent live band and their history is scattered with fine songwriting between the main two boys and Glenn Tilbrook is as fine a guitarist as you will find anywhere but as lyricists both he and Chris Difford were hailed the new Lennon/McCarney of their day. They are always reliable and somehow never really got the truly stellar stardoms both and fellow band members deserved. Good jobbing band and still working today some 35 years later

Another Single of The Day - SQUEEZE 'LABELLED WITH LOVE'

 SQUEEZE!

Single of the week (day no 2?)

Labelled with love was taken from East Side Story and I bought that when it came out and then the next time did the same only with Some Fantastic Place which remains a favourite album . . . . . we lost a dear friend around this time and it always reminds me of her untimely death from stomach cancer. I am not religious but that song brings me solace and comfort

Also working with alcoholics as I did for a long time the Labelled With Love is so poignant and brilliantly written and spot on the money, a telling and intelligent diatribe about the bottle, alcohol addiction and I have probably singled these songs out before but you know what . . . . . . . . . I don't care! These guys especially Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook who incidentally is a much overlooked fine guitarist as well as a peerless song writer and also the band numbered one of finest musos and pianists in Jools Holland too but somehow I don't think they ever really hit the heights they all deserved collectively . This is simply one of the best written songs of the period.

memorylane1980s says on YouTube

Good quality VERY rare video recorded from Top Of The Pops 1981. Squeeze are an English band that came to prominence in the United Kingdom during the New Wave period of the late 1970s, and continued recording successfully in the 1980s and 1990s. They are known in the UK for their hit songs "Cool for Cats", "Up the Junction", "Tempted", "Labelled With Love", "Black Coffee In Bed", "Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)", and "Hourglass". Though not quite as commercially successful in the U.S., "Tempted", "Hourglass" and "853-5937" were all American chart hits for Squeeze, and the band have a dedicated following there and continue to attract new fans. All of Squeeze's hits were written by band members Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford. The group formed in Deptford, London in 1974, and first broke up in 1982. Squeeze then reformed in 1985, and broke up again in 1999. The band reunited for tours through the United States and United Kingdom in 2007, and this touring version of Squeeze has continued into 2010. The band's founding members in March 1974 were Chris Difford (guitar, vocals, lyrics), Glenn Tilbrook (vocals, guitar, music), Jools Holland (keyboards), and Paul Gunn (drums). The group played under several names, most frequently "Captain Trundlow's Sky Company" or "Skyco", before selecting the band name "Squeeze" as a facetious tribute to The Velvet Underground's oft-derided 1973 album of the same name.[citation needed] Gilson Lavis replaced Gunn on drums and Harry Kakoulli joined on bass in 1976. Squeeze's early career was spent around Deptford in SE London, where they were part of a lively local music scene which included Alternative TV and Dire Straits. The group's early singles and debut EP, 1977's Packet of Three, were released on the Deptford Fun City Label. Squeeze's first EP and most of its self-titled debut album (1978) were produced by John Cale for A&M Records. Cale had been a member of Velvet Underground from whose album Squeeze took their name. However, the debut album's two hit singles ("Take Me I'm Yours" and "Bang Bang") were produced by the band themselves, as the label found Cale's recordings uncommercial. In the United States and Canada, the band and album were dubbed U.K. Squeeze due to legal conflicts arising from a contemporary American band called "Tight Squeeze". The "U.K." was dropped for all subsequent releases. In Australia, the same name change was used due to legal conflicts arising from an existing Sydney-based band also called "Squeeze". Albums in Australia were credited to U.K. Squeeze up to and including Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti. The band's second album, Cool for Cats (1979), contained the band's two highest charting UK singles in "Cool For Cats" and "Up The Junction", both of which peaked at No.2. John Bentley replaced Harry Kakoulli on bass in 1979 following the release of the LP. Argybargy (1980), the band's third album, was also a UK hit. It was additionally a mild breakthrough in North America, as the single "Another Nail In My Heart" was a No.56 hit in Canada, and second single "Pulling Mussels From The Shell" received airplay on U.S. rock radio stations. Keyboardist Jools Holland left the band for a solo career in 1980. Keyboard duties were taken over by highly-rated singer-keyboardist Paul Carrack, a former member of British soul-pop band Ace, who scored a major international hit with the song "How Long." Carrack had also been a member of Roxy Music. In 1981 the band cut perhaps their best-known album, East Side Story. It was produced by Elvis Costello and Roger Bechirian, and featured Carrack's lead vocals on the radio hit "Tempted". Carrack himself left after the release of East Side Story, and was replaced by Don Snow. This line-up recorded the Sweets From A Stranger LP in 1982. Negative reviews, the stresses of touring, and conflict between band members led Difford and Tilbrook to break up the band later that year, after releasing a final single, "Annie Get Your Gun". Difford and Tilbrook confirmed during an interview at the V Festival in 2008 that they planned to produce a record of new Squeeze material. However, as of yet, no new Squeeze material has been played live in concert. Squeeze did release Spot The Difference, an album of newly recorded versions of older material, in August 2010. The album contained classic Squeeze songs painstakingly reproduced in such a fashion that fans are invited to 'spot the difference' from the original versions. Please visit my other Channel. SQUEEZE

The Hague - Holland 16th March 1980

For Squeeze fans (who isn't? If you're not there is something wrong with your eardrobes!) there is this from the mercurial and eclectically wonderful Floppy Boot Stomp who were in touch the other day!
This in 1980 in The Netherlands featured the line up still with Jools Holland as a sort of mad maitre d' so that he even covers Ahmet Ertegun's 'Mess Around' (which I love from Professor Longhair & Dr John and Ray Charles too come to that but I digress) for a lively not to say rowdy set  (it is The Paradiso after all!) the quality of this is EXTRAORDINARY! It was a Dutch radio broadcast it seems Broadcast live on Dutch Radio Vara Hilversum III, Download it immediatement mes braves would be my considered advice and prescription!

It's from around the time of their album 'Argy Bargy

Couldn't find any other covers not back cover as FBS point out but they are kind enough to list the tracks here:
Songs are
1. Slap And Tickle
2. Touching You Touching Me
3. Slightly Drunk
4. Pulling Mussels From The Shell
5. Funny How It Goes/Hop Skip And A Jump
6. Another Nail In My Heart
7. Cool For Cats
8. Mess Around
9. I Think I'm Go-Go
10. Take Me I'm Yours
11. If I Didn't Love You/Strong In Reason
12. Misadventure
13. It's So Dirty
14. Goodbye Girl
15. Up The Junction/There At The Top

GREAT FUN! Give it a BLAST! I know I did!

SQUEEZE!

"EASTSIDE STORY"

On this day in music history: May 15, 1981 - “East Side Story”, the fourth studio album by Squeeze is released. Produced by Roger Bechirian, Elvis Costello and Dave Edmunds, it is recorded at Eden Studios in London from Late 1980 - Early 1981. Originally conceived as a double album with different producers working on one half each, it is pared down to a single album with Bechirian and Costello producing the bulk of it. It is also the bands first album to feature new vocalist and keyboardist Paul Carrack. Expanding on their trademark new wave sound, “East Side” is more musically diverse than their previous work, exploring a more pop oriented side of the band. The musical shift broaden the bands fan base, especially in the US. It spins off three singles including “Tempted” (#49 Pop, #8 Mainstream Rock) and “Is That Love” (#35 UK). The album is remastered and reissued on CD in Europe in 1997 with two additional bonus tracks added. The remastered CD is reissued in 2008 by American Beat Records, but without the bonus tracks. “East Side Story” peaks at number nineteen on the UK album chart and number forty four on the Billboard Top 200.

Always enjoyed Squeeze with frankly in Difford and Tilbrook and vocals from the now legendary Paul Carrack, some of the best modern songwriting we have ever seen. Tilbrook is also a vastly underrated musician and guitarist. Somehow they never lived up to the success their talent suggested, if that makes sense. I know they have a strong and immensely loyal following but they never really hit the big time that they deserved to. Too clever perhaps for mass appeal, their biggest hit 'Cool For Cats' is throwaway pop. Fun but not with the subtlety or depth of 'Tempted' here
I think my favourite album is 'Some Fantastic Place' their tenth and it contains some truly great songs and features the return on keyboards of Paul Carrack who I really admire also.

Naughty Little Rash . . . . . . .

SQUEEZE

- Live in CHICAGO 30th June 1980

SQUEEZE have let themselves go!

Some old chat . . . . . .

lovely set from Floppy Boot Stomp this morning and I like to think it was posted for me! (that would mean you have a follower or that somebody actually reads this old toot? ED) after we mentioned SQUEEZE the other day. This is a startling peach! (can you have a startling peach? ED) look leave off mate . . . . .I can be startled by a peach if I choose!

This is a doozie! Jools Holland era Squeeze at their vituperative best (do you even know what vituperative means ? - ED) yeah it means ranting, railing, angry criticism so I love the sardonic acid lyrics . . . . . . leave off! They've won Ivor Novello awards mate!
