Relating the sudden and dramatic demise of noted racehorse Long Shot at a race held at Kingston's famed Caymanas Park, 'Long Shot Kick The Bucket' became one of Trojan Records' earliest UK chart hits, with the record peaking at No.21 in the Official UK Singles Chart.

The track was since become a skinhead anthem, its enduring popularity due in part to a cover version by the Specials that featured on the UK ska band's chart-topping live EP entitled Too Much Too Young, which also featured their interpretations of 'Liquidator' and 'Skinhead  Moonstomp'.

Stylistically, the covers range from early reggae to soulful lovers rock, and even on to the American-style pop that was briefly all the rage on the island. The artists read like a who's who list of Jamaican talent -- Dennis Brown, John Holt, Delroy Wilson, and many, many more. Although the songs may be considered by some as little more than lightweight pop, the performances suggest otherwise, and virtually every one of these tracks rings with sincere emotion. Bob & Marcia (aka Bob Andy and Marcia Griffiths) reach profound depths on "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" and Slim Smith is aquiver with vulnerability on "Everybody Needs Love," while the Jay Boys out-soul the Temptations on "I Can't Get Next to You." Lloyd Charmers exudes disbelief at his own good fortune on "Just My Imagination," and when Horace Andy sings "Ain't No Sunshine," you can feel the whole world darken. Every song included is of this same remarkable quality. Turn down the lights, turn up the stereo, and feel the passion.

The first British reggae sub-genre to achieve ‘outernational’ success and influence the music of Jamaica, lovers rock was a dominating force in the UK scene, from the mid-Seventies through to the close of the Eighties. Developed largely as a counterpoint to the more militant style of roots reggae, the romantically themed genre was heavily influenced by the styles of US R&B and the predominantly soulful Jamaican rock steady sound of the Sixties. Despite the style achieving mainstream success with a number of major UK chart hits, lovers rock received scant attention in the mainstream media until the screening of Steve’s McQueen’s award-winning 2020 BBC TV series, “Small Axe”, the highlight of which was an aptly titled episode that paid tribute to the style and its impact upon British culture. Since then, interest in the genre has continued to grow internationally and reflecting this trend comes this handsomely packaged album which is presented in this3CD set.

Comprising the most popular and influential recordings in the style, the collection includes works by such legendary British performers as Janet Kay, Carroll Thompson and Louisa Mark, alongside established Jamaican reggae royalty, notably Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, John Holt and Sugar Minott. With its focus firmly upon the best-loved romantic reggae sounds of the Seventies and Eighties (this 3CD set digs deep into the archive), this essential collection of dancefloor favourites provides the most authentic representation of lover's rock sounds yet to see issue. TIGHTEN UP Vols I - VI

The six original Tighten Up albums are now available as a two-disc, 52-track package. Credited with really selling the English public on reggae, the series featured now-classic work by the Maytals, Delroy Wilson, the Upsetters, Bob Marley & the Wailers, Slim Smith, the Uniques, and the Pioneers. The British skinheads were particularly impressed, especially by such stomping anthems as Clancy Eccles' "Fattie, Fattie" and the Upsetters' "Return of Django." And for those favoring a slower pace, this mix of 1968-1974 sides includes plenty of smoky relaxants by the likes of Judy Mowatt, Johnny Clarke, and Nicky Thomas, among many others.

Ken Boothe :: Down By The River

Are you sure Neil done it this way? Not exactly, but it’s hard to care when the results are this good. Revered reggae crooner Ken Boothe teamed up with producer Lloyd Charmer’s in the early 70s, after a decade cutting sides for a who’s-who of Jamaica’s top producers. Nestled amid covers of Syl Johnson, Marvin Gaye, and Bread on his 1975 LP Everything I Own, Boothe’s take on ol’ Shakey’s downer ‘Hey Joe’ narrative is a scorcher for the books.

Taking their cue from Buddy Miles’ arrangement (the credits erroneously attribute the entire tune to Miles it being penned of course by Young), Boothe and Charmers trade soul-funk for a sultry lovers rock groove, punctuated with Willie Lindo’s serpentine fuzz guitar licks. Channeling anguish and disillusion into each verse, Boothe takes his time over the gentle breeze of a backup choir before bursting into the chorus like someone confessing to a long-kept secret, finally unburdening themselves of earthly sins and taking the first glorious steps on the toward liberation and, who knows, maybe even salvation. | j annis
