Fiona Whelan Prine a memory of her husband, John Prine

 JOHN PRINE

More John . . . . . just read this memory from John's widow Fiona Whelan Prine. The last song John wrote is an emotional paean (to her I would claim) and it is as sad as heartfelt and self aware as he ever got . . . . . . . . .

I remember the evening John came home having written a new song with Pat McLaughlin. He loved to write with Pat because it meant he got to hang out with him-they were old friends and committed co-writers. John and Pat had shared many Meat and Three lunches and written some beautiful songs together over the years.
I had never seen John quite like this when he had a new song to bring home. He literally bounced in the door, immediately took his guitar from its case and said, “Listen to this Fi...” He was excited and proud, but there was something else too.
As he picked the melody I could see he was emotional with tears welling up in his eyes.
“I’ve been down this road before, alone as I can be careful not to let my past go sneakin’ up on me....
He stumbled over some of the lyrics, stopped, and started again. A yearning, evocative, and simple melody; his classic fingerpicking and a somewhat familiar yet new 3-chord melody from the same old D-28 John had written every song on.
“I remember everything, things I can’t forget
the way you turned and smiled on me on the night that we first met...”
He made it through the song and explained there were still some tweaks needed and asked, “What do you think Fi ?” We were both crying a little by now and I told him it was beautiful - that it was as beautiful a song as he had ever written.
John would always say, ‘No song before it’s time.’ I’m not sure if he heard that from someone else but I know he absolutely believed it to be true.
It appears John knew more than I imagined about the demands of Time. He left us a beautiful and timely parting gift. Thank you, John.
Thank you, for Everything.

 TONY RICE

June 8, 1951 – December 25, 2020

Tony Rice

I came to Rice late and was blown away by his style and range and as flat pickers go, indeed as any guitarists go,  he was clearly amongst the very best

We lost Tony Rice Christmas Day . . . . .

Bluegrass guitarist Tony Rice, who was recognized as one of the all-time greats of the genre, has died. He was 69 and passed suddenly on December 25, his former label Rounder Records noted.

As a solo performer, collaborator, and leader of the Tony Rice Unit, Rice was known for his inimitable skill as a flatpicker, an intricate, fast-paced, melodic style of guitar playing. Rice’s distinctive style, heavily influenced by jazz, was an influence on scores of artists in the bluegrass world and beyond, including the likes of Jason Isbell and Steve Martin. His signature guitar, a Martin D-28, had belonged to the Byrds’ Clarence White.

A SNEAK PEAK AT THE BEATLES' 'GET BACK'

Film director Peter Jackson has offered fans a teaser of the delayed Beatles film 'The Beatles: Get Back'. The film is a reworking of 1970's 'Let It Be' and is delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Jackson reveals that they are about "halfway through" the edit. The film is expected to be released in August 2021. Watch the sneak peak video below:

'I WANT TO SEE REAL CHANGE'

David Byrne has shared his hopes for a post-Donald Trump America, though admits it is "too early to celebrate". Byrne was speaking at the release of his new Spike Lee-directed concert film American Utopia. "For me Trump was not so much a shock; we knew who he is," Byrne told the NME. "He was around New York before that, in the reality show [The Apprentice], we knew what kind of character he was." Byrne then warned that it is "too early to celebrate" following Trump's loss to Joe Biden in last month's election, discussing the current Republican control of the Senate. "[This] is what happened with Obama..." Byrne said. "I want to see real change happen."

COLLECTING DUST

DYLAN'S 1970 COPYRIGHT COLLECTION TO BE RELEASED ON CD

A very limited quantity of this Bob Dylan 3CD set has already been released through Badlands Records in the UK but now there's news that a more widely circulated version of the 3CD set will also be released on February 26, 2021. Copyright collections are unheard music that an artist has never officially put out for sale and hence their copyright will lapse and the music will enter the public domain unless commercially released before the 50 year time limit for copyrights. This 1970 collection rounds up all the outtakes from the 'New Morning' and 'Self Portrait' sessions that were not already available on 'The Bootleg Series Vol 10: Another Self Portrait' along with a legendary session with George Harrison. There are 74 tracks in total and nine of those feature George Harrison.

EXTRA

VAN MORRISON'S FOURTH ANTI-LOCKDOWN SONG!

The latest and fourth anti-lockdown song written by Van Morrison will be performed by guest Eric Clapton. Stand And Deliver is sung by Clapton. Announcing the song, Clapton said:
"It is deeply upsetting to see how few gigs are going ahead because of the lockdown restrictions. There are many of us who support Van and his endeavours to save live music, he is an inspiration! We must stand up and be counted because we need to find a way out of this mess. The alternative is not worth thinking about. Live music might never recover."

Morrison had previously shared three anti-lockdown protest songs, in which he accused the government of being "fascist bullies". 'No More Lockdown', 'Born to Be Free' and 'As I Walked Out' were written in opposition to the government's coronavirus restrictions.

All proceeds from the song will go to Morrison's Lockdown Financial Hardship Fund, which helps musicians facing financial insecurity as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

Can someone please take these two muppets to a NHS Hospital for a visit! Talk to the staff and those at the front line if only to stop them whingeing about their lack of access to MONEY!

 Sheesh - Dumb as Soup! . . . . . . . .

OH, DEAR, Sigh: Eric Clapton and Van Morrison release anti-lockdown song “Stand And Deliver"

Looking forward to reading what Lancet science article they have based their evidence on hey?

>>SIGH<<

your anti-science, anti-fact conspiracy songs against public health and safety are really helping a lot.

Sigh: Eric Clapton and Van Morrison release anti-lockdown song “Stand And Deliver"

Eric Clapton and Van Morrison have decided the timing is right to release a song raging against the stay-at-home orders leaders have put in place in the effort to slow the spread of the disease and save lives. “Do you want to be a free man,” Clapton sings. “Or do you want to be a slave?”

Worse yet, Morrison and Clapton seem to be buying into conspiracy theories that the worlds’ governments are somehow participating in an organized plot to overplay the seriousness of the pandemic in order to exert their power: “Stand and deliver / You let them put the fear on you / Stand and deliver / But not a word you heard was true.”

SHAME ON YOU . . . . . BOTH!

Gee Thanks Guys!

your anti-science, anti-fact conspiracy songs against public health and safety are really helping a lot. DUMB AS SOUP!

Contenders for the Darwin Awards no doubt?!

with all proceeds going to Morrison’s Lockdown Financial Hardship Fund

It’s a noble cause, but man do they make it hard to support the effort.
