Song to start The Day : Neil Hannon | The Divine Comedy - The Summerhouse

  • Track Name

    The Summerhouse

  • Artist

    The Divine Comedy

The Divine Comedy - The Summerhouse (1994)

Bathed in the warm light of nostalgia and loss.

You were only nine years old
And I was barely ten
It’s kind of weird to be back here again

We love Neil Hannon . . . great writer and singer songwriter and all round musical genius!

Thanks as ever to the legendary bookseller Sharon Murray, my ole muckah who introduced me to his work . . . . . . . . .

PULP:: Babies - HIS/HERS

 PULP

We have mentioned Pulp and Jarvis Cocker before and how the Sheffield born (?) Bookseller Sharon Murray turned me on to several bands I hadn't heard of when she came to Oxford. . . not least Pulp and 'His and Hers' became a constant feature on my Walkman whilst working in the book trade in Oxford I literally must have played nothing else for months (Sharon's recommendations also included the Irishman Neil Hannon and everything 'Divine Comedy' - so I bought everything then and since by him too!) I think I bought all the Pulp stuff but it still stands that His/Hers is my favourite album and is Cocker's writing at it's very peak IMHO

Thanks Sharon . . . . .wherever you are

Lovely set this morning from Neil Hannon a.k.a. The Divine Comedy over at Big O
I have prolly mentioned elsewhere I was introduced to Neil's work by bookseller and colleague and all round QofE (Queen of Everything) Sharon Murray (amongst others - Pulp for example) for which I am eternally grateful. The notes say he has released 11 albums and I was going to say I have pretty much everything he released but if it's eleven I am going to have to check in the vaults! That's some output and frankly he never disappoints but I don't think I have eleven albums.
This is a curio in that it is the missing legendary instrumental versions promo of his work which given he is a lyricist and writer of intelligence and wit is something of a puzzle but it is worth saying he is also a unique musician and composer too. Enjoy!

Have we done this? . . . . . . . . . I don't care . . . . I loved Pulp and (alongside Neil Hannon in the form of The Divine Comedy) I have to thank my dear friend and colleague bookseller par excellence Sharon Murray who turned me onto both of them. [Did you know Hannon wrote "My Lovely Horse' from Father Ted? Along with the theme tune] Sharon was a special friend at the book chain we worked for and taught me a great deal not least about how to approach computers [essentially an attitude of "Play with the toys, they can't hurt you!")

'His 'n' Hers' is one of the finest albums ever written and is prolly in my top ten

Jarvis is a genius . . . . . . (as is Sharon)
