Umberto Eco on Nazism

[…] While [Umberto] Eco is firm in claiming “There was only one Nazism,” he says, “the fascist game can be played in many forms, and the name of the game does not change.” Eco reduces the qualities of what he calls “Ur-Fascism, or Eternal Fascism” down to 14 “typical” features.

“These features,” writes the novelist and semiotician, “cannot be organised into a system; many of them contradict each other, and are also typical of other kinds of despotism or fanaticism. But it is enough that one of them be present to allow fascism to coagulate around it.”

  1. The cult of tradition. “One has only to look at the syllabus of every fascist movement to find the major traditionalist thinkers. The Nazi gnosis was nourished by traditionalist, syncretistic, occult elements.”
  2. The rejection of modernism. “The Enlightenment, the Age of Reason, is seen as the beginning of modern depravity. In this sense Ur-Fascism can be defined as irrationalism.”
  3. The cult of action for action’s sake. “Action being beautiful in itself, it must be taken before, or without, any previous reflection. Thinking is a form of emasculation.”
  4. Disagreement is treason. “The critical spirit makes distinctions, and to distinguish is a sign of modernism. In modern culture the scientific community praises disagreement as a way to improve knowledge.”
  5. Fear of difference. “The first appeal of a fascist or prematurely fascist movement is an appeal against the intruders. Thus Ur-Fascism is racist by definition.”
  6. Appeal to social frustration. “One of the most typical features of the historical fascism was the appeal to a frustrated middle class, a class suffering from an economic crisis or feelings of political humiliation, and frightened by the pressure of lower social groups.”
  7. The obsession with a plot. “Thus at the root of the Ur-Fascist psychology there is the obsession with a plot, possibly an international one. The followers must feel besieged.”
  8. The enemy is both strong and weak. “By a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak.”
  9. Pacifism is trafficking with the enemy. “For Ur-Fascism there is no struggle for life but, rather, life is lived for struggle.”
  10. Contempt for the weak. “Elitism is a typical aspect of any reactionary ideology.”
  11. Everybody is educated to become a hero. “In Ur-Fascist ideology, heroism is the norm. This cult of heroism is strictly linked with the cult of death.”
  12. Machismo and weaponry. “Machismo implies both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits, from chastity to homosexuality.”
  13. Selective populism. “There is in our future a TV or Internet populism, in which the emotional response of a selected group of citizens can be presented and accepted as the Voice of the People.”
  14. Ur-Fascism speaks Newspeak. “All the Nazi or Fascist schoolbooks made use of an impoverished vocabulary, and an elementary syntax, in order to limit the instruments for complex and critical reasoning

Jenny

Play "Jenny"
on Amazon Music Unlimited (ad)
I'll sing you a song and a merry song
Concerning Yorkshire Jen
Who never yet run with horse or mare
But run just now and then

When she came to Newmarket town
The sportsmen viewed her 'round
And all the cry was "Alas, poor wench
She'll never run this ground"

'Cause she was ordinary, hasn't got any
Hasn't got anyone

When she came to the starting post
The mare looked very smart
And let them all say what they will
She never lost her start

When they came to the two mile post
Poor Jen was cast behind
How they laughed and how they jeered
But Jen she did not mind

'Cause she was ordinary, hasn't got any
Hasn't got anyone
'Cause she was ordinary, hasn't got any
Hasn't got anyone

When they came to the three mile post
The mare looked very pale
She laid her ears on her bonnie neck
And past all of them did sail

"Come follow me, come follow me
You all will not forget
None of you'll catch me again
And I'll make you all to sweat"

'Cause she was ordinary, hasn't got any
Hasn't got anyone
'Cause she was ordinary, hasn't got any
Hasn't got anyone

When she came to the winning post
The whole crowd gave a cheer
Showered with love from the jockey lad
She jumped like any deer

The jockey said, "This race you've won
This race for me you've got
You could gallop it all again
When the rest could hardly trot"

'Cause she was ordinary, hasn't got any
Hasn't got anyone
'Cause she was ordinary, hasn't got any
Hasn't got anyone

She was ordinary, hasn't got any
Hasn't got anyone
She hasn't got anyone

Aquarium Drunkard Book Club Chapter Three feat. Brian Eno

Aquarium Drunkard also posted his third part of the book club featuring titles new and not so by Baba Ram Dass ( personal hero either of Be Here Now) Orson Welles, Paul Theroux, Oliver Stone and Bill Graham but also featuring a title from my Christmas list a signed copy of Brian Eno's 25th Anniversary Edition of 'A Year With Swollen Appendices' revised and with new entries about which he says

Welcome back to the stacks. It’s Aquarium Drunkard’s Book Club, our monthly gathering of recent (or not so recent) recommended reading. Your librarians this month are Justin Gage, Tyler Wilcox, Kyle Fortinsky, and Jason P. Woodbury.

Aquarium Drunkard - Book Club - Chapter Three

A Year With Swollen Appendices (25th Anniversary Edition), Brian Eno:Heading into 1995, Brian Eno decided to keep a diary. His year of missives and notes—sometimes short, sometimes expansive—form the core of A Year With Swollen Appendices, where they are supplemented by the titular appendices, in which Eno expounds on his creative theories and practices, correspondences with Stewart Brand of Whole Earth Catalog fame, and, for this newly released 25th anniversary edition, a 2020 introduction by the author in which he ponders evolutions in language and the breakdown of consensus reality. Given its unorthodox fashioning, A Year With Swollen Appendices doesn’t make for a straightforward read. But Eno’s jokes, rambles, gripes, complex internal arguments, visits with friends, and descriptions of meals, conversations, travel, and pornography consumption build up to a sum much greater than their parts. Crucially, it offers intimate glimpses of studio work with David Bowie (working on 1995’s Outside), U2 (working on the Passengers album), James, and Jah Wobble, in which we get a sense of what makes Eno a “drifting clarifier,” to borrow Brand’s description. “Generally, my feeling is towards less: less eating, less drinking, less wasting, less playing by the rules and recipes. All of that that I want in favor of more thinking on the feet, more improvising, more surprises, more laughs,” Eno writes on January 10. It’s a good summation of what the book provides: in its abundance of autobiographical detail, it nonetheless provides a big picture view, light on its feet and open to seemingly endless possibilities and ways to uncover them.

Juke Joint boogie via Aquarium Drunkard who points out:

We may still be a ways away from gathering in a crowded bar to catch a little live music — but in the meantime, enjoy this downright miraculous 17-minute clip of R.L. Burnside in 1974. Filmed in glorious black-and-white by Memphis’ unclassifiable Tav Falco, it’s a startlingly vivid portrait of the then-thriving Mississippi Hill Country blues scene, with Burnside presiding over a packed house with nothing but a guitar and amplifier. He doesn’t need a vocal mic; he sounds absolutely clear and authoritative, the greatest one-man-band of all time. As good as R.L. is, it may be the crowd who are the real stars here, dancing, drinking, laughing, living. A beautiful moment in time, wondrously preserved. |

Great Pyramid of Giza

GREAT PYRAMID OF GIZA

After posting the piece about Stonehenge and the missing circle I spotted this

Close-up of the Great Pyramid of Giza

The volume of the Great Pyramid of Giza is 2,583,283 cubic meters. To build Giza’s great pyramid, the ancient builders used around 2.3 million stones weighing, on average, 3 tons. The Great Pyramid of Giza was the most accurately aligned structure on the planet’s surface, facing true north with only 3/60th of a degree of error.

The four faces of the Great Pyramid are slightly concave, making it the only pyramid built this way. Despite what you may think about this ancient structure, the Great Pyramid of Khufu is an eight-sided figure, not a four-sided figure. Each of the pyramid’s four side are evenly split from base to tip by very subtle concave indentations

Quite how it is 'facing' true north when it has "eight sides" is a moot point but certainly the construction is astonishing if it took great teams of men (slaves?) to move three ton blocks into place I would like to know how that was done. Wonder what the death rate was like?

Einstein on God - Sunday ruminations

 SUNDAY RUMINATIONS

EINSTEIN, SPINOZA AND GOD

Did you know that when Einstein gave lectures at the numerous US universities he was invited to, the recurring question that students asked him was:

Do you believe in God?

And he always answered:

I believe in the God of Spinoza.

The ones who hadn’t read Spinoza didn’t understand…

I hope this gem of history, serves you as much as it does me:

Baruch de Spinoza was a Dutch philosopher considered one of the three great rationalists of 17th-century philosophy, along with RenΓ© Descartes in France, and Gottfried Leibniz in Germany.

Here’s some of his wisdom:

God would have said:

Stop praying and punching yourself in the chest!

What I want you to do is go out into the world and enjoy your life. I want you to enjoy, sing, have fun and enjoy everything I’ve made for you.

Stop going to those dark, cold temples that you built yourself and say they are my house! My house is in the mountains, in the woods, rivers, lakes, beaches. That’s where I live and there I express my love for you.

Stop blaming me for your miserable life; I never told you there was anything wrong with you or that you were a sinner, or that your sexuality was a bad thing! Sex is a gift I have given you and with which you can express your love, your ecstasy, your joy. So don’t blame me for everything they made you believe.

Stop reading alleged sacred scriptures that have nothing to do with me. If you can’t read me in a sunrise, in a landscape, in the look of your friends, in your son’s eyes… you will find me in no book! Trust me and stop asking me. Would you tell me how to do my job?

Stop being so scared of me. I do not judge you or criticize you, nor get angry, or seek to punish you. I am pure love.

Stop asking for forgiveness, there’s nothing to forgive. If I made you… I filled you with passions, limitations, pleasures, feelings, needs, inconsistencies… free will. How can I blame you if you respond to something I put in you? How can I punish you for being the way you are, if I’m the one who made you? Do you think I could create a place to burn all my children who behave badly for the rest of eternity? What kind of God would do that?

Forget any kind of commandments, any kind of laws; those are wiles to manipulate you, to control you, that only create guilt in you.

Respect your peers and don’t do what you don’t want for yourself. All I ask is that you pay attention in your life, that your consciousness is your guide.

My beloved, this life is not a test, not a step, not a rehearsal, nor a prelude to paradise. This life is the only thing that exists here and now, and it is all you need.

I have set you absolutely free, no prizes or punishments, no sins or virtues… no one carries a marker, no one keeps a record.

You are absolutely free to create in your life heaven or hell.

I could tell you if there’s anything after this life, but I won’t… but I can give you a tip. Live as if there is nothing after… as if this is your only chance to enjoy, to love, to exist.

So, if there’s nothing, then you will have enjoyed the opportunity I gave you. And if there is, rest assured that I won’t ask if you behaved right or wrong, I’ll ask. Did you like it? Did you have fun? What did you enjoy the most? What did you learn?…

Stop believing in me; believing is assuming, guessing, imagining. I don’t want you to believe in me… I want you to feel me in you when you kiss your beloved, when you tuck in your little girl, when you caress your dog, when you bathe in the sea.

Stop praising me, what kind of egomaniac God do you think I am?

I’m bored being praised, I’m tired of being thanked. Feeling grateful? Prove it by taking care of yourself, your health, your relationships, the world. Express your joy!… that’s the way to praise me.

Stop complicating things and repeating as a parakeet what you’ve been taught about me.

The only thing for sure is that you are here, that you are alive, and that this world is full of wonders.

What do you need more miracles for? Why so many explanations?

Look for me outside… you won’t find me. Find me inside… there I am beating within you.

Baruch Spinoza.

I cannot find a single author for this piece and people throughout the web have cut and pasted much as I have here so apologies to the author but I found it interesting and reproduce it here. If it is your work please get in touch or if you so wish allow me to credit it to you

The God Nun Raises the Sun - Art From The Future

Art of The Week

An occasional look at the art world and pictures that I have found wandering around t'interweb

The God Nun Raises the Sun

Nun, god of the primeval waters, origin of all life and chaos, lifts the barque of the sun god Re (represented by both the scarab and the sun disk) into the sky at the beginning of time. Nut, goddess of the Sky, is hanging from above, holding the god Osiris, also hanging from upside down, who holds the sun from above.
This union, between the sun and Osiris, represents a solid eternal union between the soul and the body which meant to be a complete resurrection of the human being. Vignette from Book of the Dead of Anhay. New Kingdom, Ramesside Period, 20th Dynasty, ca. 1189-1070 BC. Now in the British Museum.
