"Bowie wrote Absolute Beginners in the summer of 1985 for the film by Julien Temple. In reality, it wasn't even supposed to exist. The guitarist Kevin Armstrong had been called to Abbey Road without knowing who he would be playing for: they had just been told to show up with a guitar, which a certain "Mr. X" would arrive with. The "Mr. X" was Bowie, there to record the demo of That's Motivation for the film's soundtrack — at the same time when, by the way, Labyrinth was being filmed by Jim Henson. The work on that track proceeded so quickly that there was no time left in the studio. In that half hour, the framework of what would become one of his most beloved songs took shape.Then came a deeply bowian request: they needed "a female voice that played like that of a shop assistant." It wasn't a provocation, nor a joke. Armstrong immediately thought of his sister Janet, who worked in a shop in London, and proposed it: it would be her first and only professional experience in a recording studio.Bowie accepted without hesitation. It was precisely Janet Armstrong's voice that intertwined with his in the record, with a delicacy almost imperceptible. The success came almost naturally. The song broke through.When the video came out, I remember that day well.I entered a shop with the money in my pocket and left with that record in my arm, as if I had just made a small pact with myself.I remember the cover in my hands on the motorbike. I remember the impatience of getting home and putting the vinyl on the table. But above all, I remember that rare feeling, at that age: the awareness of having made a choice that truly belonged to me, from beginning to end.Every time I listen to Absolute Beginners, I go back a little. To that boy who was changing without realizing it. To that moment when music stopped being just something you listen to and became something that accompanies you. Something that helps you build yourself.Perhaps this is the deepest meaning of the song. Stay beginners. In love, in friendship, in life. Continue to look at what we know with eyes still capable of being amazed. Because there are things that time does not consume. A love, a song, a memory.
