BUTTERBOY TRIBUTE TO: FRANK BEARD

TRIBUTE - FRANK BEARD R.I.P.

Butterboy says:

TRIBUTE

FRANK BEARD R.I.P.

Frank Beard’s passing today feels like the loss of a foundation stone in American rock music. For more than fifty years, he was the pulse of ZZ Top, the drummer whose feel, discipline, and sly rhythmic humour shaped one of the most recognisable sounds in modern blues‑rock. While Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill stood out front with the long beards and the swagger, Frank was the quiet force at the back of the stage, driving every song with a groove that was unmistakably his.

Born on June 11, 1949, Beard grew up absorbing jazz, swing, country, and Texas blues, and he carried all of it into his playing. His shuffle was legendary — crisp, relaxed, and locked so tightly into the pocket that it became a signature of the band. Tracks like La Grange, Tush, Cheap Sunglasses, and Sharp Dressed Man don’t just feature his drumming; they depend on it. His touch gave ZZ Top their swing, their humour, and their sense of motion. He understood space, understood restraint, and understood exactly when to push the band forward.

Frank never chased attention, never demanded the spotlight, and never needed to. His contribution was deeper than showmanship. He was a craftsman, a musician who served the song first and always. Fans loved him for that humility, and fellow drummers admired him for the precision and feel that seemed effortless but was anything but.

His death leaves a genuine ache, for the music, for the history, and for the man himself. ZZ Top’s heartbeat has fallen silent, yet the grooves he created will continue to echo through speakers, stages, and memories for generations. Frank Beard gave rock music a rhythm that will never fade, and today the world feels quieter without him.  (B)
