Forgetting You - James Carr [The Dark End of the Street] a favourite song and album

Forgetting You

artofthesong:

"Unfortunately, James Carr was his own worst enemy, suffering from bipolar disorder his whole life. Ultimately, its the only refuge we can give ourselves in trying to figure out just why this man wasn’t as equally lauded as Otis Redding. While popular consensus might have slipped from his legacy, he was critically lauded, especially for his 1967 album You Got My Mind Messed Up. Many point to his version of “The Dark End of the Street” as being the definitive version and the best on the album, but my favurite is “Forgetting You” a half midnight oil burner/barnstormer that finds Carr in peak form, putting on a vocal performance that even Otis Redding himself might be hard pressed to match."

The Dark End of the Street- James Carr

Regulars may recall that I collect covers of James Carr’s classic r’n’b’ number Dark End of The Street whose titular album this is and largely thanks to Ry Cooder’s version of the song recorded with Bobby King and Terry Evans when I first heard it (it possesses one of the finest guitar solos I have ever heard him play IMHO) I am of course saddened to hear Carr suffered poor mental health and what we would have then called manic depression especially

HANS THEESSINK

I am somewhat ashamed to say I hadn't heard of Hans Theessink but he featured in a Facebook group I belong to dedicated to Ry Cooder as the chosen artist of the week. I happened to mention that I also had no idea Terry Evans played the guitar in response to a video posted there and Hans himself replied almost immediately to say "Terry composed on the guitar - he had a total unorthodox style of playing - great groove" I was so struck by this I thought I should really post more of Hans' superb work here. Mind you anyone who can play with Ry and have Terry sit in you might know he is a brilliant player . . . . . . .

In good company here . . . .

Hans and Terry released an album back in 2012 with a featured guest . . . . . . . Ry hisself!

RY COODER

"Get Your Lies Straight"

Now over on a group page on Facebook we had been talking about singles and this came up as the 'B' side to one of my all time favourite Johnny Cash covers in Ry's cover of 'Get Rhythm'  and it is "Get Your Lies Straight" here and we wondered why Ry didn't include it on the album. Someone posted out the wonderful force of nature that is Terry Evans who had recorded it on an earlier (sic) album and maybe Ry thought he wanted to put it on a single but didn't want to take away anything from Terry's version. That doesn't quite work from what you can see below but both are worthy of our attention. I don't know why it was left off Get Rhythm but I am happy too look at both versions here. Noting that I like Terry's mention of the subject of lying for a living in politicians which seemed apposite . . . better get your lies straight
