Helen Levitt (1913–2009) was an American photographer celebrated for her poetic and spontaneous images of New York City street life.
Working mainly with a Leica 35mm camera, she captured children at play, everyday gestures, and fleeting moments in working-class neighborhoods.
Her best-known works include her 1930s–1940s street photographs, her color work from the 1970s, and her collaborations with Walker Evans and later with filmmaker Janice Loeb.
Levitt’s style is lyrical, intuitive, and deeply human—making her one of the most important street photographers of the 20th century.
