Universally respected and in demand as a piano player, Hopkins developed a junk and alcohol dependence in an attempt to self medicate to battle life long Crohn’s disease; his habit early on meant he never really quite managed to live up to expectations despite seeking help from the scientologist’s Narconon programme in the 1980s which he claimed got him clean and sober and he spent the rest of his life in America a devotee of the quasi-scientific cult of the rich and famous . . . . a tragic loss to the world of music aged only 50 largely from the effects around Crohns and his previous attempts to self medicate
