Mo’ Mike Henderson - Wouldn’t Lay My Guitar Down [Thicker Than Water 1998] A SEALYMAN SPECIAL SELECTION!

 The Sealyman popped back to bring me up to speed to say he had meant to post links to Mike Henderson doing I Wouldn’t Lay My Guitar Down ( I know the feeling!) from the 1998 album ‘Thicker than Water’ so y'ere ’tis! This for the legend that is the SEALYMAN!

Hope ya got ya boogie pants on!

lazy poker adds so this explains the dialogue Dave and I had about Mike and Hound Dog Taylor . . . . i.e. not just us!

“I can't recall anymore who once brought Mike Henderson to my attention, the bluesman who turned "new country" songwriter came back to the blues in 1996 with his band The Bluebloods' and the excellent album First Blood". the 1998 follow-up Thicker Than Water" was an even stronger outing and featured this great track . . . what a joyful noise (reminiscent of Hound Dog' Taylor) rumbling out of the speakers here, innit?! Enjoy!” Oh, we did Lazy Poker we DID!

Sealyman Says: Check THIS action : JAMES McMURTRY : The Black Dog and The Wandering Boy

James McMurtry - Norman Records

The Black Dog and the Wandering Boy by James McMurtry

BUY IT NOW at NORMAN RECORDS and sign up to their Newsletter - I JUST DID!

So the Sealyman dropped by (well he emailed me!) with tracks from the new James McMurtry album

and it’s a SCORCHER!

Norman says (records that is!) : James McMurty's eleventh album is a collection of folk tales borrowing subtle traits from himself and his late father. The album's rich harmonies, hearty Americana instrumentation, alongside the witty introspection McMurtry is known for, push it into one of his greatest pieces of personal storytelling.

LAREDO

pretty sure we have all encountered a small dark something . . . . . . .

"When his father died in 2021, James McMurtry went through his effects and discovered a rough pencil sketch of himself as a child. “I knew it was of me, but I didn’t realize who drew it. I had to ask my stepmom, and she said it looked like Ken Kesey’s work back in the ‘60s.” The Merry Pranksters—Kesey’s roving band of hippie activists and creators—stopped by often to visit Larry McMurtry, his wife Faye, and his very young son James. He held on to that drawing as he worked on a new album, The Black Dog & the Wandering Boy, his eleventh. It’s a collection of rough-hewn story-songs and richly drawn characters sketches that have elements of Americana—rolling guitars, barroom harmonies, traces of banjo and harmonica—but sound too sly and smart for such a generalized category. Funny and sad often in the same breath, it adds a new chapter to a long career that has enjoyed a recent resurgence as younger songwriters like Sarah Jarosz (who plays on the new album) and Jason Isbell (who took McMurtry on tour) cite him as a formative influence. McMurtry’s characters face similar realizations, although theirs are harder, sadder, and arrive at the end of life rather than the beginning. Sometimes they find life savers, like a calling or a fond memory; sometimes they drown, like that South Texas lawman. Even the songwriter himself doesn’t always know what will happen or what will inspire him. “You follow the words where they lead. If you can get a character, maybe you can get a story. If you can set it to a verse-chorus structure, maybe you can get a song."

SOUTH TEXAS LAWMAN

JIM WHITE NEWS (for the Daves!) Sealyman and Van D!

 Jim White update

We had been talking about Jim White with the Sealyman! and I said I had been contacted by my old boss and mentor (another Dave) who sent me images and asked if I knew him and how much he had enjoyed the set and there is this . . . White had been touring last month (with his trio?) and we missed him it seems . . . in Jan he released this which frankly is a scary and dark as he usually gets! Thanks mostly to Trey I reckon . . . . but phew what a voice!

More DAILY NEWS! CHUCK PROPHET - GET OFF THE STAGE! | TWILIGHTZONE +

 THE DAILY PROPHET

For Sealyman and Brother Jobe

Chuck Prophet - "Get Off The Stage”

From the album, The Land That Time Forgot.
Why whatever can he be singing about!

Order now:
https://ffm.to/landtimeforgot

Me, I’m just one man
Up on the stage I make my stand
Yes, it’s true I have a band
Up here behind me

While you, you’ve got your crew
and the Secret Service too
and your wife from the EU
But you’re no good at rhyming

So hey, get down off that stage
We’ve heard everything you’ve got to say
You’ve been calling all the shots
You’ve got us all tied up in knots
C'mon man, get off the stage

Now me, I spend half of my life
In an Econoline van
With my band and my wife
And when she steps up to the mic
I’ve seen grown men burst out crying

While you, you’ve got an ugly mouth
You got no heart at all, except for your Russian pal
You’re an obstruction in democracy’s bowel
And the patient is dying

So come down off that stage
Please get off the stage
Come on down and take a seat
We’ll put some John Prine on repeat
All we’re asking is get off the stage

if you were an automobile
You’d be out of gas
With four flat tires
And a smog check that’s never gonna pass
If you were a pair of socks
You’d be full of holes
You’re one bad hombre
So why don’t you just turn around
And go home

And maybe do something with that hair
Take a walk in the park
Visit a renaissance fair
You’re headed for prison, you know
But don’t be scared
The first time is the hardest

Just get down off that stage
We’ve heard everything you’ve got to say
Take a book down off the shelf
Try to love somebody else
Whatever you do, just get off the stage

From the SEALYMAN! | ARTIST of THE WEEK | ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO - Castanets - Five Hearts Breaking - TINY DESK concert at NPR

so Sealyman dropped to say "check this out Swapperoonie"! Continuing the shared passion of Texas Rockers or New York/ Texas connection with fellow Chuckster (Prophet that is - where ya bin?) they have played together Sealyman tells me

 Alejandro Escovedo - Castanets live (Check the Lou Reed tribute with the opening feedback!)

Music In The Bridge: Alejandro Escovedo, "Five Hearts Breaking" 30/4/16

if still not too sure who these Tex Mex connected freaks are check this Tiny Desk Job

NPR Says
"When Alejandro Escovedo and his backing band known as Don Antonio set up behind the Tiny Desk, their first sounds were blistering loud. That's when we broke the news: We wouldn't amplify Alejandro's voice. We got a slightly sullen look from the band; but despite the toned-down volume, they were all still amped up. The musician, who once opened for the Sex Pistols, obliged with a smile and seemed to appreciate the difference between being pelted with spit and debris by punk rock fans and being showered with loving appreciation in the NPR Music office. Escovedo pulled the three-song set from The Crossing, the most recent chapter in his ongoing odyssey and a typically hard-rocking, literate saga about two teenagers looking for their American Dream of rock and roll and beat poetry. The close quarters of the Tiny Desk allows for a kind of backstage insight into the musical and visual interplay between Escovedo and the veteran Italian band Don Antonio. Lead guitarist Antonio Gramentieri is the perfect foil for Escovedo, who adds a heavy dose of edginess to the sound with his power strumming. Alejandro Escovedo fans are a close-knit group. We've followed his lead and have been treated to various musical aggregations over the years. But as you see in this video, this setup seems to be working just fine and may be his strongest yet." Set List "Teenage Luggage" "Something Blue" "Sonica USA" Musicians
Alejandro Escovedo: lead vocal, guitar;
Antonio Gramentieri: vocals, guitar;
Denis Valentini: bass;
Matteo Monti: drums;
Nicola Peruch: keyboard;
Gianni Perinelli: tenor sax;
Franz Valtieri: baritone sax
