In the final episode of this series of Guy Garvey’s From The Vaults, the spotlight turns to 1987. It’s a year of farewells as The Tube comes to a close and The Smiths part company. Also featured are memorable performances from John Martyn and Big Audio Dynamite, as well as an early interview with Björk and Einar from The Sugarcubes. 

The show also includes hits courtesy of Julian Cope, Public Image Ltd, New Order, Depeche Mode and The Cure.

Great episode to round off the end to this series with Depeche Mode, Julian Cope's follow up to World Shut Your Mouth, 'Trampoline' and a rare live performance of John Martyn's 'May You Never' brilliant stuff and love Guy's witty if sometimes too spare comments! More please . . . . . . . .

 Being from the North of England this always struck a resonance with me and its multicultural vibe I found transportingly lovely. Inspired by Nick Drake ("composed upon Nick's guitar from the album cover   Bryter Layter" which is difficult in that the Guild M-20 featured wasn't Nick's at all but belonged to Nigel Weymouth's the art director and artist, he of Hapsash and The Coloured Coat psychedelic poster genius.  it is most likely that the album featured Nick playing his Martin D-28 or his Levin dreadnought *) and the Dream Academy single was featured by Guy Garvey on his excellent TV programme From The Vaults the other day [Series 2 Episode 3]

Tonight’s episode of ‘Guy Garvey: From The Vaults’ sees Guy focus on 1985, where overseas stars like Chaka Khan and Tom Waits descend on Newcastle to appear live on The Tube. Guy also looks back at rarely seen performances from Prefab Sprout, Dream Academy, China Crisis and The Style Council.

Please note Guy Garvey is a top fellah and has broken news on his Twitter that fans like me have long awaited and that is there is a new album from the mercurial Stephen Fretwell who I had worried about as he seemed to have disappeared. Fretwell is the performer of the brilliant theme song for Gavin and Stacey so you'd think someone kept tabs on him

I will post a separate note about this as soon as I have bought the new album, buy it now sight unseen, sound unheard it WILL be worth it. . . .

Elbow frontman and broadcaster Guy Garvey lifts the lid on two decades of TV gold – with era-defining musical performances, long lost studio appearances and revealing interviews that have remained on the shelves for decades. 

I've been watching Guy Garvey's From The Vaults on Sky Arts television and enjoying it immensely. It does seem to contain genuine elements that have never been seen before largely from The Tube and other similar programmes Being an Elbow fan it was always going to appeal and Garvey is a fine frontman to such a programme

We got up to Episode Four yesterday and 1984 where we looked at The Style Council with a previously unseen 'Shout To The Top' and it finished with someone Guy obviously admires above many others in Talk Talk's sadly missed Mark Hollis with some deeply moving comments and clips

Hollis retired from music to spend more time bringing up his children in 1998 and his untimely death in 2019 was a shock to us all

I had I am ashamed to say forgotten recently just how great Talk Talk and Mark Hollis' songwriting was and he is much missed and we are unlikely to see his like again. Thanks to Guy's most welcome reminder
