Ultravox: A box of... (50th Anniversary 1977-2027 Super Deluxe Edition) (37CD) (2027)

A BOX OF...

Ultravox: A box of... (50th Anniversary 1977-2027 Super Deluxe Edition) (37CD) (2027)

In celebration of 50 years since Ultravox released their debut single 'Dangerous Rhythm' on 4 February 1977, here is a splendid overview of their extraordinary work.

Ultravox (previously styled as Ultravox!) were a British new wave band, formed in London in April 1974 as Tiger Lily. Between 1980 and 1986, they scored seven top ten albums and seventeen top 40 singles in the UK, the most successful of which was their 1981 hit "Vienna".

From 1974 until 1979, singer John Foxx was the frontman and the main driving force behind Ultravox. Foxx left the band in March 1979 to embark on a solo career. Midge Ure took over as lead singer, guitarist and frontman after he and keyboardist Billy Currie worked on the studio project Visage. Ure revitalised the band and steered it to commercial chart success lasting until 1987, at which time the group disbanded.

A new line-up, led by Currie, was formed in 1992, but achieved limited success with two albums failing to chart and one solitary single reaching No. 90 on the UK Singles Chart. The band's best-known line-up of Currie, Ure, bassist Chris Cross and drummer Warren Cann re-formed in 2008 and performed a series of shows in 2009 and 2010 before releasing a new studio album, Brill!ant, in May 2012 which reached No. 21 on the UK Albums Chart. In November 2013, Ultravox performed as special guests on a four-date UK arena tour with Simple Minds. These shows proved to be Ultravox's last, as in 2017 both Currie and Ure indicated that Ultravox had run its course.

FREDDIE

Farrokh Bulsara born in Stone Town, Zanzibar  - September 5, 1946 - November 24, 1991 Kensington, London

I'm afraid to say I was never a Queen fan but appreciate the fans and people who adored them and Freddie especially. His performance at the Live Aid concert impressed me very much! certainly made me sit up and take notice!
Freddie you are missed!

LIVE AID 1985

Now I was never a fan of 'Queen' all that pomp and bombast and camp posturing but here Freddie is on fire and this never fails to raise a smile - Radio Gaga Radio Goo Goo indeed . . . . . and we all loved Live Aid and felt that we were at least TRYING to do SOMETHING!

On this day in music history: July 13, 1985 - The “Live Aid” concert is broadcast live via satellite worldwide. Organized by Bob Geldof, the two concerts held at Wembley Stadium in London and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, consists of over 50 acts performing to over 172,000 fans (at the individual venues) and a TV viewing audience of 1.9 billion people. The event raises over $300 million for Ethiopian famine relief at the time of the original broadcast. An abridged edition of the historic concerts, featuring ten of the sixteen hours worth of performances originally broadcast, is released as a four disc DVD box set in November of 2004, eight months shy of the events 20th anniversary. The entire concert is not released due to video tapes of certain performances having gone missing over the years, with ABC (one the original US broadcast carriers) having erased their broadcast tapes of the event (at Bob Geldof’s request). However MTV did preserve their tapes as well as the BBC (though some performances were also lost). Other performers such as Led Zeppelin and Santana ask to have their performances omitted, feeling they are subpar. In lieu of their performances appearing on the box set, they donate money to the Band Aid Trust instead.
