ROXY MUSIC - GRAHAM SIMPSON band co-founder

 As we were mentioning Roxy Music through Phil Manzanera’s 'Diamond Head' and the line up after Brian Eno’s leaving, I noticed a reference to bass player Graham Simpson who it is said started Roxy Music with Bryan Ferry before Eno, Phil and Andy and I looked him up as I hadn’t heard of him.  This is sad but worth a read . . . .

Brian Ferry’s webpage has a profile which is well worth a read and worth knowing . . . . .a fellow art student at Newcastle under the tutelage of Richard Hamilton [and fellow student Rita Donagh who went on to be Richard’s partner and wonderful artist in her own right], Graham seems to have been an entirely supportive and encouraging voice to Ferry when he was somewhat less self assured. It seems only fair to share this link

  . . . .and a single from the intermittent series of discs bought when they came out, this one from the bargain bins and ex-jukebox 7" era and this I still have in my collection. . . . . . my first sighting of the lifelong hero Brian Eno . . . . . Bryan Ferry not quite so much, Phil Manzanera also an interesting guitarist and always worth checking out

Bert Hardy shot for the advert for Strand cigarettes - the kiss of death in suggesting that you were never alone with a Strand meant the sole smoker was a lone figure with no friends proved a disaster!

post Brian Eno, hence my largely indifferent response, this is a fine quality set of rehearsal tapes and highly listenable . . . . . . . I am minded of the reaction of father of Pop Art, Richard Hamilton and his partner Rita Donagh to Bryan Ferry when I told them he had paid homage to Richard and Duchamp in Roxy's oeuvre. ('The Bride Stripped Bare' is a straight lift) They both expressed surprise, Richard somewhat bemused and largely ignorant of what ever it was Roxy and Bryan were trying to do and Rita even more confused as fellow students at Newcastle they both said he showed little sign of interest in what Richard was doing when he taught there, some thing of a dilettante they thought (style over substance perhaps?) . . . . ( this always makes me laugh . . . . .) still, Do The Strand eh?

But then it does appear to have taken three people to replace our Brian!? . . . . .  ha ha ha ha ha 

and remember 

Lovely set from Voodoo Wagon just in this morning of Roxy Music featuring Brian Eno from BBC Sessions 1972-1973 - those of you who have read further know Eno is a major interest of mine and once he left Roxy Music I pretty much lost all interest in the band although I think I kept up with things until about 'Country Life' I think. Although Bryan Ferry retained his interest in all things Pop artistically, he had been taught by Richard Hamilton at Newcastle Poly. Richard remained unaware of this for years (I discussed it with him and he seemed utterly bemused when I mentioned the song 'This Is Tomorrow' a direct quote from an early Richard Hamilton curated exhibition and his partner Rita Donagh said of him 'oh he was interesting, I think. Such a nice boy!')

This BBC sessions set is rare in that it features Brian but is worth checking out for all Roxy fans

not the same without the rest of Roxy Music and especially without Brian in  all his be feathered glory!! I like the drummer though! We need more women drummers IMHO!
