What’s The Matter With The Mill - Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe

1931

Trouble at the mill. Blues in the groove.

Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe bring their voices and guitars together in a fine slice of country blues, with an easy interplay that makes this duo such a pleasure to hear.

I think thanks to my old friend and colleague Ian Cole (The Jet Rink Band) Education Officer at MOMA Oxford on my last stint round there who introduced me to this fine fine song first heard by Moon Mullican. What’s up Minnie?

DOWNTOWN BLUES - FRANK STOKES

1928

Country blues from the heart of Memphis

Before electric blues reshaped the sound of the city, musicians like Frank Stokes were already building something distinctive with their guitars and powerful vocals.

“Downtown Blues” is a fine example of this early country blues tradition.

    1979

    A little early Pylon magic

Here’s a glimpse of the band working out the sound that made them such a distinctive presence in post-punk.

There’s something oddly infectious about “Functionality”; it gets into your head without asking permission.

  • something of the Young Marble Giants about this maybe crossed with a bit of Souixie & The Banshees perhaps . . . . suffice I LIKE it

The Delmonas were never ones to leave a good rock’n’roll song alone.

Their take on “Farmer John” captures the Medway scene’s enduring love affair with garage rock and the sounds that came before it.

    image

    1981

A brilliant little collision of punk attitude and pop instincts

The Mistakes were an all-female Oxford band whose brief recording career left behind this wonderfully catchy 1981 single.

Judy Parsons played drums and sang backing vocals in The Mistakes, before moving on to The Bodysnatchers and later The Belle Stars.

    Just let it groove

There’s something utterly irresistible about this one.

The groove settles in, the guitars keep circling, and the same beautiful pattern just keeps pulling you back in.

I could listen to this forever.
