An “Apache” and his protégée in a bar in the Paris red light’s district of Pigalle, 1938
I am fascinated by much of the history of French photography from Brassai to Cartier-Bresson, Lartigue to Man Ray, Ronis to Doisneau, and the period around the turn of the 20thC into the prewar period always fascinates more than any other somehow. Through Brassai I have wondered about the culture of the streets and the notion of ‘Apaches’ and the red light districts especially.
