JUSTIN HAWKINS RIDES AGAIN! [Podcast, YouTube and Facebook]

I’ve just discovered a new podcast and new (to me) video blog from the excellent Justin Hawkins (he of The Darkness) discussing all things pop and music generally. I found it on the Facebook (sic) ha ha ha . . .and I really enjoyed listening to him expounding thereon.

I though at first it might be a bit negative as the first clip I played seemed really aggressively anti (who needs that right?) but he explored Maroon 5 being (rubbish!) and also something about Liam Payne (sic) is he from One Direction?! ( Now I like Harry Styles from them and have enjoyed the fact that that boy can really sing! (honestly he CAN!) but I didn’t quite GET what he was saying about Liam who is friends with Lewis C and I was a bit put off but then he went on and I thought oh heck he is going to have a pop at Taylor Sift and I was pleasantly surprised but not only his musicianship but his anecdote about listening to her new single and then an earlier album that had come ‘back’ around thanks to his daughter playing it at home and them both listening to it together and see . . . . . . its all a delight! As a major dramatic rocker par excellence who would have expected him to be pro The 1975, Taylor Swift and Lewis Capaldi!? Not me!

He is at once uncritical appreciative of musical talent and hard work and everything creative an egoless talent!

Fun right?
. . . . . . . . . . . now he goes on to reflect upon 1975 (he likes them Matty Healy especially! my daughter will be doubtless pleased to note) and apart from Harry, Matty and 1975 and Taylor he seems to be a fascinating cove who is more than capable of shining a light on their songwriting, singing and I like listening to him play. I think he is lucky enough to have perfect pitch (witness his playing along with Taylor and working out the key she is playing and singing in)

He also mentions with a deep and affectionate regard for Lewis Capaldi which we like and reflects upon Lewis’ use of ostinato* (I know right!) and here are some links to the Facebook entrees below and we finish with the Lewis reflection

*Ostinato is used in music to describe a musical phrase or rhythm that is repeated persistently. The repeated pattern could be a melody, a figure in the bass – called a basso ostinato or simply a repeated rhythmic idea

GLASTONBURY 2023 | Of course there were other highlights too!

'The outpouring of support for Lewis Capaldi during his set wasn’t sympathy – it was affection. It was love'

After which Lewis said this on Social Media

to which we say we understand and do what you need to get better. Some time off is no bad thing, two albums under your belt and some wonderful performances I think that’s enough for now eh? You get well and hope you spend some time with your family and loved ones to rest and re-charge your batteries

So what’s boy to do but take a tip from my daughter who turned me on to your music anyway and go buy the two albums! They arrived yesterday morning with the postie!
And down right fab they are too!

Sending you in spirit a Elvis Costello song ‘What’s So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding?” Take the greatest care. You are beloved Never forget!

LEWIS CAPALDI

I saw Lewis Capaldi on Graham Norton last night and sometimes we just want him to do SO well. Hoping he isn't going to just be a one hit wonder after 'Someone You Loved' which is so exceptionally fine . . . on this evidence alone he is going to be around for some time to come . . . . .

The new single is extraordinary and here is the evidence. The intensity of emotion in this young man's voice is so moving, a blues for the 21stC and he has a gift of nature in his ability to sing in this way. Perfect pitch I imagine and I am not sure anyone appreciates really how difficult singing like this actually is. Especially when the music can be so sparse. Staggering piece of work and as the post interview clearly shows and young man with a finely tuned sense of humour.
We LOVE Lewis round our way!

Lewis Capaldi

Someone else on the current scene I have stumbled across and really enjoyed the strength of his voice and his appearances live and culminating in his Glastonbury gig this year
Here he is with the also very interesting young guitar driven young singer songwriter  James Bay melding their two songs, hits at the moment , faultlessly. . . . . . . I love the way James looks at Lewis and the joint work is peerless

Now it is interesting (well to me) to note that my two year old granddaughter loves Lewis Capaldi too as well as her Mum and I but the new video seen here upsets her and she wants to know 'where the girl gone' . . . . . . .I decided upon telling her she had gone to the chip shop which seemed to do the trick!

Lovely song Lewis - heartbreaking stuff . . . .

I’m going under and this time I fear there’s no one to save me This all or nothing really got a way of driving me crazy I need somebody to heal somebody to know somebody to have somebody to hold It’s easy to say but it’s never the same I guess I kinda liked the way you numbed all the pain Now the day bleeds, into nightfall and you’re not here, to get me through it all I let my guard down and then you pulled the rug I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved I’m going under and this time I fear there’s no one to turn to This all or nothing way of loving got me sleeping without you Now I need somebody to know somebody to heal somebody to have just to know how it feels It’s easy to say but it’s never the same I guess I kinda liked the way you helped me escape Now the day bleeds, into nightfall and you’re not here, to get me through it all I let my guard down and then you pulled the rug I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved And I tend to close my eyes when it hurts sometimes I fall into your arms I'll be safe in your sound til I come back around For now the day bleeds, into nightfall and you’re not here, to get me through it all I let my guard down and then you pulled the rug I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved But now the day bleeds, into nightfall and you’re not here, to get me through it all I let my guard down and then you pulled the rug I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved I let my guard down and then you pulled the rug I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved

The comments and interactions with Noel 'Who's He?' Gallagher have been hilariously met by Lewis who has clearly won hands down and made the 'old fellah' look especially dumb (not that this is difficult mind but I expected better from you, Noel) and appearing with his daughter in a crowded audience capped it all for me

Touché! and for the WIN!
