The Band tearing through "Don't Do It" at Woodstock, Sunday August 17, 1969.
The song started as Marvin Gaye's "Baby Don't You Do It," a 1964 Motown single written by Holland-Dozier-Holland. The Band had been playing it since their bar band days, and by 1969 they'd turned it into their own, with Levon and Rick trading vocals over a groove that never lets up.
The festival took its name from the town The Band called home, though the show itself ended up 60 miles away in Bethel. They went on after Ten Years After to a tired, rain-soaked crowd, and their set never made it into the Woodstock film or the original soundtrack.
