I discovered Townes, I am ashamed to say (I guess) through Nanci Griffith's version of this extraordinary song on Other Voices, Other Rooms [1993] and was a fan of Van Zandt from then on . . . . . the version on YouTube of them both singing this is amongst the most haunting there has ever been of this fine fine song . . . . . . . . this is why he is one of the finest Americana songwriters there has ever been IMHO
