a brief sketch of the great Mime, MARCEL MARCEAU

 MARCEL MARCEAU

We all know the visual mime jokes of the man inside a glass box, pretending to hold a briefcase unimaginably heavy, sliding along with our hands, flat palms out as if we are stuck but there are many others too and yet I wonder is everyone aware where they originated? The enlightening story of the master mime artist wasn’t known to me and whilst the name was in common parlance we don’t necessarily know how come he came to act in total silence and the truth is heartbreakingly simple

Thérèse Le Prat     Marcel Marceau, Paris     1950

“Do not the most moving moments of our lives find us without words?” Marcel Marceau

Marcel Marceau, born Marcel Mangel, was a French Jew, originally from Strasbourg.  His father was murdered in Auschwitz.  During his teen years, Marceau became active in the French Resistance, in a unit commanded by his cousin, Georges Loinger.  In the Resistance, Marceau was both a forger of false documents for people fleeing the nazis and a resistant who smuggled several hundred Jewish children to safety in Switzerland.
It was while clandestinely moving these young people that Marceau, in order to keep them calm, quiet and entertained, first began to experiment with mime.  He also credited his experience during the war and the murder of his father with the tragic tone of much of his mime performance.
As he later said: “The people who came back from the camps were never able to talk about it. My name is Mangel. I am Jewish. Perhaps that, unconsciously, contributed towards my choice of silence.”

My Old School :: One More Step | Blue Rose Code

. . . . a few Christmas films caught the eye over the holiday and this was no exception, My Old School starring the mercurial Alan Cumming [who we like] and this extraordinary story bemused and indeed hypnotised me. It finished with this song written as a supposed modern “hymn’ by the man who wrote ‘The Lord of The Dance’of 1967 [Sydney Bertram Carter (6 May 1915 – 13 March 2004 born in Camden Town, the English poet studied at Oxford, a songwriter, and folk musician who described his work as coming from the edge of belief) another classic ‘folk’ song and for this listener a secular classic . . . . . . I love this version by Blue Rose Code and he (for indeed it is a he : Ross Wilson)  is really worth checking out . . . . . . . .

Merry Christmas Everybody! - Creature Comforts [11 days! One to go . . . . . . ]

On the eleventh day of Christmas it caused me to reflect on the Twelve Days of Christmas and its song

Aardman’s Creature Comforts revisited this in the story of Christmas which is worth another viewing

so whether it be eleven silver trays, or ladies dancing or indeed pipers piping we have but one day to go and the Christmas break is over . . . . . . .

The Pointer Sisters - How Long (Betcha Got a Chick on the Side)(1975)

Very funky R&B from Oakland’s own, Pointer Sisters, who also co-wrote this song.  It was one of their early hits.

Did we post this?  . . . . . . .. . can’t recall . . . . . .don’t care . . . . . . . . after watching the Scorsese profile of George George Harrison: Living in the Material World (2011) and thinking I should really watchThe Beatles: Get Back again (fourth time? RORY GALLAGHER - Rock Life With Jack [Bruce that is!] Live in Cologne 1990 | Heavy Bootz

So shall we start the year off with some Rory Gallagher and a fine fine set too from over at HEAVY BOOTZ live in Germany back in ‘90 with guesting Jack Bruce on bass and vocals on the last three tracks. Breathtaking stuff obviously from Rory and Jack but Rory’s band here with Mark Feltham (harp) Gerry McAvoy on bass (before Bruce takes over!) and Brendan O’Neill on drums are such a fine fine back up to this . . . . . awesome stuff and great great quality!

Enjoy and TURN IT RIGHT UP!
