Tribute to Ibrahim Ferrer

The "Cuban Nat King Cole" - Ibrahim Ferrer

I think like many of us who bought the Buena Vista Social Club album when it came out we fell for many if not all the musicians therein and I particularly found the story of Ruben Gonzalez the piano player particularly moving as he no longer had access to his instrument of choice until Ry and the gang came upon him again and the account of setting him up to record which turned out to be his first ever solo album is almost heartbreaking.

Ry Cooder caused an international sensation when he introduced the world to Cuba's son musicians with his 1997 CD Buena Vista Social Club. The CD, which met with extraordinary critical and popular success, went on to win a Grammy, and helped fuel America's current love affair with Latin music.

In 1999 Wim Wenders released his documentary of the same name, in which he profiles the legendary Buena Vista Social Club musicians, recording their experiences as they perform in Cuba and abroad, eventually appearing at New York's Carnegie Hall.

The film was nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary feature in 2000. It won as best documentary in the European Film Awards as well as many others.
