Guy Clark - songwriter

Guy Clark and his fellow songwriter and artist his wife, Susanna

In 1975, Guy Clark, the storyteller with a Texas wooden guitar, left an unforgettable mark with his debut album Old No. 1. Among its humble, unpolished melodies, “Like a Coat From the Cold” emerges as one of the most beautiful songs, quiet yet persistent, clinging to the listener’s heart for nearly half a century.

Without needing charts or bright stage lights, Guy Clark used only a guitar soft as breath and a warm, slightly raspy voice to tell a simple story: two souls finding warmth in each other during a long winter. Every line feels like a layer of soft fabric wrapped around the heart, gentle and honest, just like Guy himself, a man who lived with simplicity, steadiness, and a love for the smallest things in life.

“Like a Coat From the Cold” was never a major hit, but it became a hit in the hearts of those who lived with it. It is a song like an old coat we never let go of, not for how it looks, but for the warmth it brings whenever life turns cold.
