Today's post features 3 artists, all of whom I've seen live. John Hiatt was the first show I attended after a 2 year hiatus due to the pandemic, on September 25, 2021 in Morristown. That was 34 years after the first tine I saw Hiatt, in August 1987 at the Pier in New York City. That gap is the 3rd longest time for me betwen seeing an artist, behind America (38 years between 1978 and 2016) and Pat Benatar (40 years between 1981 and 2021). I saw Nick Lowe for the first time in July 1979 as part of Rockpile, at the same bill as Blondie at Belmont Race Track. Then I saw Lowe for the 2nd time on April 1, 1983, backed by Paul Carrack. They led-in for Tom Petty. This TV soundboard recording captures Hiatt, Lowe and Carrack in Hamburg on the German televison program Rockpalast on December 11, 1983, 42 years ago today. Four years later, Lowe would help Hiatt record his breakthrough album, Bring The Family.
I was just listening to an interview this morning with Nick where he mentions that ‘What’s So Funny (About Peace, Love and Understanding) was the first song he wrote!!
