"Here we are - it’s Music Monday! This is “Diamond in the Rough” from a concert I did at the Paradiso in Amsterdam, 2007.This song was a game changer for me as a writer. I got the music from John Leventhal, and for the first time in our partnership I backed off from trying to write a pop song. (Not that there’s a thing wrong with a pop song!) The way I saw it was that I was good at being a solo artist who played acoustic guitar and sang so stick to that, I figured. The acoustic guitar part for “Diamond” came to me pretty quickly.But the lyrics - there was the rub. Could I write something honest about my own experiences? I hadn’t really tried that. Too scared. But I really, really wanted to.For the sake of brevity let’s just say I figured it out and played it for Leventhal who signed off on it, which meant a great deal to me.Diamond in the Rough opened a door that forever altered how I perceived myself as a writer, how I approached being a lyricist. Were it not for “Diamond” I don’t think the “Steady On” record would’ve ever happened."
