TOM PETTY WROTE THIS SONG JUST TO MAKE GEORGE HARRISON LAUGH. đ
George Harrison, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne were discussing one of the most ridiculous songs in the Traveling Wilburys’ catalogue: “Wilbury Twist.”
And according to Tom, the whole thing began as a joke.
He had written the first verse simply to make George and Jeff laugh.
Then George got involved, and the idea became increasingly absurd.
They even came up with an illustrated dance chart explaining how to perform the imaginary “Wilbury Twist.”
The song appeared on Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3, released on October 29, 1990.
And in March 1991, it became a single, complete with a wonderfully ridiculous music video featuring celebrity guests.
Perhaps the funniest detail?
Vol. 3 was actually their second album. George apparently thought it would be funny to skip Volume 2 entirely.
Five legendary musicians started the Traveling Wilburys. And one of the things they enjoyed most was simply making each other laugh.
