SUNDAY REGGAE : DELROY WILSON :: better must come . . . . . . one day | ZEROSOUNDS

A nice Reggae album from the classic voice of Mr Delroy Wilson and his album Better Must Come

from the always fascinating ZEROSOUNDS. I found Delroy with his early hit ‘Dancing Mood’ when he was nearly as young as me! On a compilation Reggae album I had in the late sixties . . . enjoy the mature voice on these mostly covers of classic songs from the American Songbook

Delroy Wilson - Better Must Come One Day - ZeroSounds

Zero says:
Like Dennis Brown and Freddie McGregor, Delroy Wilson was barely out of short trousers when he recorded his debut single for Coxsone Dodd 's Studio One label. His first hit, 'Joe Liges' (1963), was written by Perry, Lee, who at the time was working as a talent-spotter, songwriter and singer for Dodd; the track was a lyrical attack on former Dodd employee and now rival, Prince Buster ('One hand wash the other, but you don't remember your brother, Joe Liges, Joe Liges, stop criticise'), set to a rollicking early ska rhythm. The record was so popular that his follow-up, 'Spirit In The Sky', another Perry-penned barb aimed at Buster, was actually credited to Joe Liges when it was released in the UK on the Bluebeat and Black Swan labels. Delroy went on to cut numerous records in the same vein for Dodd, including 'One Two Three', 'I Shall Not Remove', a duet with Smith, Slim entitled 'Look Who Is Back Again', and the anti-Buster 'Prince Pharaoh', notable for being the only occasion on which Dodd himself is heard on record, admonishing Buster in a coded, spoken outburst.

Wilson's voice broke just in time for the emergence of rocksteady in 1966, and his version of the Tams' 'Dancing Mood' of that year, one of the first rocksteady records, became a monstrous hit, alerting music fans to a new soul-styled crooner to match Ellis, Alton. Throughout the rest of the decade, Wilson, still recording mainly for Studio One, increased his popularity with titles such as 'Riding For A Fall', another Tams cover version, 'Once Upon A Time', 'Run Run', 'Won't You Come Home', 'Never Conquer', 'True Believer', 'One One', 'I'm Not A King', 'Rain From The Skies' and 'Feel Good All Over', as well as covering the Temptations' 'Get Ready'. Leaving Studio One in 1969, Wilson sojourned briefly at Lee, Bunny 's camp, which resulted in a popular reading of the Isley Brothers' 'This Old Heart Of Mine' (1969), before moving to Sonia Pottinger 's Tip Top Records, where he cut the excellent 'It Hurts' and a version of the Elgins' 'Put Yourself In My Place' (both 1969).

He teamed up once more with Bunny Lee and enjoyed a huge Jamaican hit with 'Better Must Come' (1971), which was so popular that it was adopted as a theme song by Michael Manley's PNP to increase their vote among 'sufferers', during that year's election campaign.

In 1972 his success continued with 'Cool Operator', again for Lee, and throughout the next few years he maintained his position as one of reggae's best-loved singers, with songs such as 'Mash Up Illiteracy' and 'Pretty Girl' for Gibbs, Joe, 'Love' for Gussie Clarke, 'Rascal Man' for Winston 'Niney' Holness, a cover version of the Four Tops' 'Ask The Lonely' for J., Harry, 'It's A Shame' (a version of the Detroit Spinners song for Joseph 'Joe Joe' Hookim ), 'Have Some Mercy' for A. Folder, and 'Keep On Running' for Prince Tony. In 1976 his career took a further step forward when he recorded a hugely popular version of Marley, Bob 's 'I'm Still Waiting' for Charmers, Lloyd LTD label, later followed by the well-received Sarge, still regarded by most aficionados as his best set. The misnomered Greatest Hits was also issued by Prince Tony during this period.

Further recordings towards the end of the decade, including 'All In This Thing Together', 'Halfway Up The Stairs' and 'Come In Heaven' for Gussie Clarke, did well, but Wilson's career floundered somewhat during the early part of the 80s, apart from a few sporadic sides, including the popular 'Let's Get Married' for London's Fashion Records.

The Digital age, however, provided a revival of fortunes with the massive 'Don't Put The Blame On Me'/'Stop Acting Strange' for King Jammy in 1987, and 'Ease Up', a cut of the famous 'Rumours' rhythm for Bunny Lee, as well as albums such as Looking For Love for Phil Pratt and Which Way Is Up, produced by Errol 'Flabba' Holt for Blue Mountain, since which time he has once again drifted into semi-retirement. Despite being one of the best singers Jamaica has ever produced, Wilson was rarely able to consolidate the success that came his way; nevertheless, he remained a much-loved and respected, but sorely under used and, outside of reggae circles, underrated performer.
Delroy Wilson died at the age of 46 on 6 March 1995 at Kingston's UWI hospital, of complications from cirrhosis of the liver.

Film of The Month :: KOYAANISQATSI - by Godfrey Reggio

Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance premiered in Santa Fe, NM on 28 April 1982.

In 1972, 30-year-old Godfrey Reggio began making a number of “advertising” spots sponsored by the ACLU for the Albuquerque, New Mexico viewing area, focusing on “invasions of privacy and the use of technology to control behavior.” The spots were so popular that people called the TV stations asking when they would be shown again. After the campaign ended Reggio tried to raise more money to begin another project, but failed. He was then convinced by his cinematographer Ron Fricke that they could use the remaining $40,000 to make a film.

After quickly exhausting their budget (resulting in about 20 minutes of edited film), Fricke moved to Los Angeles and worked as a waiter while trying to get jobs in Hollywood. Reggio continued to try and raise funds and the 2 began working together in 1976, traveling around the country and filming when and where they could.

In 1981, Reggio met Francis Ford Coppola who was so impressed with the footage that he saw, he offered to attach his name to the project in order to secure theatrical distribution. Reggio turned down offers from larger studios in order to have greater control of distribution and went with Island Alive (started by Chris Blackwell of Island Records), and Koyaanisqatsi was the company’s first release.

The film received significant critical praise and was a surprise financial success, due to support from college campus theatres and art house screenings.

Michael Nesmith’s Pacific Arts Video initially released Koyaanisqatsi on VHS and laserdisc.

Koyaanisqatsi also brought wider attention to Philip Glass, whose soundtrack for the film was released on Island Records in 1983.

Official Trailer

Introduced as I was to this film by a dear friend and colleague back in the day, the artist Micha Lewin this stands still as one of my favourite films of all time and is frankly a masterpiece reinventing the art form of film IMHO

JOHN FAHEY :: SHANLEY HALL NW UNIVERSITY Evanston, IL 1974 | Reed College, Portland, Oregon; April 8, 1967 | BIG O

One of the most extraordinary things about Big O (despite the tirades of filth from largely US trolls with their racist sexist school boy filth) is the amazing eclectic range of postings and recently there is no exception with this item here. A favourite and fascinating guitar savant ( I would maintain) in John Fahey the extraordinarily gifted and unique self taught player and composer of guitar pieces without equal

Astrid Kirchherr in Get Rhythm - Colin Hall

Nice posts dotted around this morning on Astrid Kirchherr

Reinhart Wolf & Astrid Kirchherr in Hamburg, Germany 1960 © Klaus Voormann

“Astrid and The Beatles became even closer when she invited them to her home in Altona. For the first time since arriving in Hamburg, the five boys were able to enjoy some home comforts and escape the desperate privations of their hovel like accommodation at The Bambi Kino. They also enjoyed some sorely missed English food: “They loved visiting my house. For their first visit, my mother asked me what they liked to eat, and so she cooked them mashed potatoes, steak and peas – the first proper English meal they’d had since arriving in Germany. She even got them some strawberries, and made tea with milk and sugar. John and my mother got on like house on fire – even though they did not understand a word each other was saying. It was lovely to see. The boys had a good time – they had a bath and enjoyed looking through our records and books. It was to be the first of many such visits.”

Through such occasions, Astrid was able to get to know The Beatles as individuals.

“Paul is still like he was then, very lovely, deeply modest, and very well mannered. He nearly broke his tongue talking German to my mother. He had his phrase book with him. He always tried to be the translator, because he had these three or five words of German that he knew. George was the sweet one. He was just 17, and he would sit and look at things, politely asking “Can I please look at that book, that magazine?” He is one of my closest friends. I am so pleased to know that he is in England watching over me. He had had tough times recently, and so I am pleased he has his family and his religion to help him. He lost John, his parents, he was almost killed during that terrifying attack, and he had that bad cancer, but through all these tragedies he is still the George he has always been; kid, helpful and full of love for his friends. He is very caring toward me.

…

John was the strong one, always asking questions. All that anger that people associate with him and that was showing the film “Backbeat” in several scenes, where he shouts “It’s all dick!” at everyone and anyone - including me – was not the John I knew. That’s fiction, I never heard him say that. We got on every well – he was never hostile towards me.

“And Stuart!!! Well, by the time they visited my home we really had a crush on each other, so we just sat gazing into one another’s eyes, as the rest carried on. Neither of us actually made the first move, it was both of us - like magnets. At that time, Klaus was my boyfriend, but he sensed what was happening. He saw it and, in a way, forced it, which is strange to understand now, but Klaus always wanted me to be happy. He knew I wasn’t happy in our relationship. He and I were great friends, we shared the same tastes, the same sense of humour, but we just could not live together as lovers, that was impossible. So he encouraged Stuart and me a little bit.”

The Boss at Floppy Boot Stomp has posted this one and this is fine too. DEVO at their very best and in one unchaptered file. ( I was going to chapter it but messed it up so maybe later and I will send it to the guys at FBS if I re-do it. One of the things about this is people are promoting it chaptered but asking for money  . . . . . as in SELLING it!

This really annoys me but hey maybe you can have fun with Audacity or some such similar to chapter it yourselves. It IS worth it . . . . . . . .duty now for the future

from discogs -

From Discogs - This recording comes from an FM radio broadcast of Cale's New Year's Eve performance in 1975, at Cain's Ballroom in the town in which he was raised, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Featuring a majestic set of J.J. Cale favorites taken from the albums he had released by this juncture in his career, along with a couple of cuts which at the time had yet to grace a J.J. studio record, all performed in an extended format, radically different from the album versions. This recording illustrates perfectly where J.J. Cale was musically by the end of 1975 and shows the direction in which he was moving for the next phase of his marvelous career.

About Me

My photo
Andy Swapp
These pages are where since 2006 I come to largely share some musical references to the blogosphere (other music bloggers). I search a large number of sources daily for ROIOs and what we used to call bootlegs, (not official albums faked by charlatans to sell but live recording and concerts that would not be published anywhere else) and I post links to an eclectic bunch of musicians so that I hope it has broad appeal. I do NOT feature sites that charge money for any of this and if these change ever please let me know and I will delete them. It is not my intention to do anything other than share links to sites featuring ROIOs and I do not house any files myself here, This is my idea of musical fun and to relieve the stresses of daily life I also share links to articles, pictures, art or photography as was my background and training and first degree (Fine Art). Those that I have enjoyed or mean something to me and interspersed with occasional general ramblings on the world around me!
