Cathy Smith - Muse drug dealer, back up singer and groupie

Buck Edward posted this account of Cathy Smith the muse for several songs and was notoriously the person who injected John Belushi with his fatal dose of heroin & cocaine (speedballs) Despised equally by the drug using world and the ‘straight’ world, Smith was a complicated figure and difficult to like but seem to inspire many

"Cathy Evelyn Smith was responsible for three popular songs (possibly more). She was a backup singer, drug dealer & user and groupie. She was close with Levon Helm and was around when The Band formed and she toured with them early on. She was with them when they played SNL where she met John Belushi. The Band wrote The Weight partially about her. She then went on to date Gordon Lightfoot, they had a violent drug fuelled relationship and he wrote the song Sundown about her. After that she became a drug dealer to the stars including Keith Richards and was the person who injected John Belushi with his fatal speedball at the Chateau Marmont in L. A .  The Grateful Dead wrote the song West  L. A. Fadeaway about that.
She served time for Belushi’s death and when released was deported to Canada. She died in 2020 aged 73"
