SUSANNA HOFFS : Different Drum with Matthew Sweet. Written by Michael Nesmith

Susanna Hoffs

says:

"Different Drum. Written by the great Michael Nesmith. I've always loved singing Different Drum with Matthew Sweet.”

Yup the ‘Monkee’  Mike Nesmith was a songwriter of a different cloth to the rest of the band and has been labelled something of a stoner (weren’t they all? ED - well no, the others may have been but Mickey was known to be more of a ‘juicer’ as he hung around with Ringo, Alice Cooper, Hsarry Nilsson and that crew of drinkers and may have even been a peripheral figure on Lenon’s so called lost weekend (some eighteen months of heavy drinking and a burgeoning affair with May Pang) Mike perahaps the only one with a lively album career post Monkees . Ronstadt covered this and other songs by him.

Mike Nesmith Monkee (it's his name!) was prolly the first one we sussed as having other things to say and that could play (and sing . . . ) and the others we took a bit longer. Davy always cutesy schmaltzy but had Brit theatre creds right? Tork for sure had credits for singing and playing with other folk (he even sang with my ex-boss Katie B years ago from the Pomegranate Inc crew! Fer shur!) and we were never QUITE sure about Mickey D but hey . . . . . Mike clearly had a sardonic edge to playing the mock Beatle

here's a great mixtape (yes people still make them!) from the wondrous Aquarium Drunkard
