Norah Jones - on her Jazz roots . . . . Jazz Times | Don’s Tunes

No photo description available.

young young young here

Norah Jones remembers dancing around her bedroom to Mingus’ “Haitian Fight Song,” but was hit hardest by vocal-piano confessions: Billie Holiday’s 1952 version of “These Foolish Things” with Oscar Peterson; Sarah Vaughan’s way with “My Funny Valentine” “where the melody is all over the place,” heard on 1973’s Live in Japan. Jones went on to play alto saxophone in her teens as well as piano, and attended the same summer jazz camp as another future Blue Note artist, pianist Robert Glasper. “I grew up loving Billie, John Coltrane and Miles Davis,”
Jones goes on. “It made me feel something different, introspective. Part of why I love Miles is the space. That has suited me well as a musician-a lot of space.” She cites the trumpeter’s electric breakthrough, 1969’s In a Silent Way, one of her favourite Davis LPs. “It is not vocal balladry,” Jones notes. “But it is a moody little record.”

Beautiful People - If 60's Were 90's -1994 | VOODOO WAGON a Silent Way re-up!

So speaking of recordings and folk we’ve never heard of!? The Boss over at Voodoo Wagon does it again and shares a Hendrix inspired project worthy of anyone’s enquiry . .  .as he says if you haven’t heard htis before and please consider dropping by the Wagon and leaving a comment after you download it (of course!?)

Beautiful People - If 60's Were 90’s

[Back From The Dead..Again]

Beautiful People - If 60's Were 90's -1994
Studio Sessions @320
Out of Print - 5 of 5 stars

Granted permission to use any Jimi Hendrix samples they wished, this U.K. sextet released the funky If 60's Were 90's in 1994. The center of the outfit is Du Kane and Luke Baldry.
~ John Bush, All Music Guide

This recording is almost like hearing Jimi again for the first time. I accidentally heard one of the tracks while flipping through the busy FM radio dial one day. Being a big Hendrix fan, I marveled at how such an awesome piece of art had managed to escape me before. We're talking unmistakable Hendrix signature feel, masterfully interleaved with tasteful, beautifully done modern electronica. This album presents a sonic pioneer in a new setting.
I've played this CD hundreds of times. How can you tell a true classic? Because it still sounds just as fresh today as the day I first discovered it.

 Track List:

1. Comin' To Get You
2. Get Your Mind Together
3. If 60's Was 90's
4. Stone Crazy
5. Rilly Groovy
6. Happiness On The Wind
7. Sock It To Me
8. Feel The Heat
9. The Sea...Eventually

Now the video clip shared by The Boss didn’t play here in the UK for me so I hunted for another but check that out too if you don’t know this project . . . . . I LOVED IT!

If 60s were 90s Beautiful People featuring JIMI HENDRIX official Video Continuum records

Directed by Richard Heslop ..Chilled out reworking of the Hendrix lyrical and melodical classic If 6 was 9 by Beautiful People, it was a sort of Enigma meets Jimi with 10cc bvs round at the Orbs house... we sampled loads of blues guitar from Voodoo Chile, we managed to lift Jimi's entire finale solo from Voodoo Chile and it fitted perfectly at the end..of this lovely tune.
Shot in March 1994 video directed by Richard Heslop and partly shot at Richards house in Hammersmith and on location in Notting Hill. Features Jimi Hendrix Jnr as he was a friend of the band... tune created and  reworked by Du Kane and Luke Baldry in 1991 recorded at Velvet Moon Studios in Sussex.

Can you TASTE it?

was the precusor to th Reading Festival which changed from a Blues

base to Rock and endured its move across cities and venues,

The National Jazz and Blues Festival started here in Windsor

I think and was still called that before changing fields into the

centre of Reading  . . . . . we saw Keef Hartley a lot around then

and Jon Hiseman et al with John Mayall the father to them all.

I have said before but it was having an older brother who turned

me onto early blues at 13 Big Bill Leadbelly Josh White etc being

preciocious favourites but the discovery of Mayall and Alexis

Korner came as a revelation that there were

Blue Men Singing the Whites!

NEWS FOR MERKINS

The Vances are coming

Of course we advertised the fact with welcoming posters

"In classic “obnoxious American visits the Cotswolds”form

(sorry!, JD Vance has been enjoying a delightful holiday in the village of Charlbury the past week. Well, as delightful as it can be - because many of the locals clearly want him absolutely nowhere near the place.  (This village is just up the road from us and borders onto true Cotswold country)

Attempting to hide from protestors, the VP booked dinner at The Bull, the local gastropub. There was just one problem.

The mutinous staff all said they wouldn’t come to work if they had to serve Vance and his wife. Facing staff grumbles and a barrage of negative press attention The Bull refused his patronage.

(The same pub had hosted Kamala Harris the week before, as part of the pre-wedding dinner for Steve Jobs’ daughter.)” [ahem!]

we even advertised the Vance holiday with mobile welcomes on the side of local transport

I mean it would be churlish (nay even childish) to share such misfortune and share such feelings with the world but what ya gonna do!?

Mostly for the boys at HQ Brother Jobe Silent Way et al!
