Like researching early roots reggae we liked the soul train sound of the Hammond and organists who used it

Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson brought an archaic weirdness to Canned Heat. Obsessed with traditional blues and well versed in the boogie dialect of John Lee Hooker.

I think I have mentioned waking up to Canned Heat at one of the first Glastonbury Festivals way back when and bought at least three albums after that not least 'Boogie'  and this one the last Hooker n Heat

There was always something rather mysterious about them to me, Bob The Bear's weight belying his stomping good time blues, the Blind Owl's mystic short sightedness and introverted presence, Levine bearded hippy wonder reincarnated as an old blues guitarist and then Harvey Mandel and his Cristo Redentor where 'n the heck did they find HIM!?. . . . . I loved Let's Work Together (still do!) and Going Up The Country I bought as a single as wells On The Road Again which I learned to play. The band's Speed Kills message was always apposite (eventually) so was surprised to learn here about the imbibing of Sterno sounds truly dreadful and reminds me of the client who justified his drinking to me by explaining he didn't drink alcohol but found petrol did the trick (sic!). This article is really worth a read and nails the mysterious side of Wilson (who knew he was named Blind Owl by John Fahey no less?!Wilson wrote the liner notes to Fahey's legendary album Blind Joe Death) and well worth a listen to all those interested . . . . . . Boogie Chillun!

for those really interested his Wikipedia entry is a really good read and introduction to his legend, believed now to have been autistic and possibly suffering from Asperger's syndrome, Wilson was a chronic depressive and tried to kill himself several times. A profound conservationist despondent at the way the planet was headed. Expected on tour of Europe he was found dead of an overdose (reds or barbiturate poisoning) in his sleeping bag around the back of Bob Hite's house out in the hills of Topanga Canyon. 

He was 27.

So sad to hear of the passing of a favourite artist and one of the nicest and most interesting men I ever met. Tom Phillips aged 85. 

I have his book 'A Humument' in one of its editions as an artist's book (Thames & Hudson I think!) Works, Texts by Hansjörg Mayer and a signed print somewhere in the Swapper's Mansions vaults prolly down passed the Ha-ha and beyond the dungeon and the secure archive where I keep my records (ask your grandparents about vinyl)

The sitter here is Pella Erskine-Tulloch (b. 1956), bookbinder. After working as a binder and conservator at the College of Arms, London, she set up a studio to work with Phillips on his edition of Dante’s Inferno.

It’s been more than 50 years since Neil got together with Crazy Horse, but still — nothin’ else matters. Young has just released the Rick Rubin-produced World Record, his third album with the band in as many years, and the heart of the group remains the same as it was back in ’69: drummer Ralph Molina and bassist Billy Talbot, who together have provided the elemental rhythmic bedrock that Neil has relied on for all these years. Aquarium Drunkard caught up with Talbot from his South Dakota home to get the lowdown on the Horse’s past, present and future.

CHRISTINE PERFECT (nee McVIE) R.I.P. 1943 - 2022

Fleetwood Mac’s Christine McVie has died on November 30 at the age of 79, her family has said. A statement on Facebook said: “On behalf of Christine McVie’s family, it is with a heavy heart we are informing you of Christine’s death.

“She passed away peacefully at hospital this morning, Wednesday, November 30, 2022, following a short illness. She was in the company of her family. We kindly ask that you respect the family’s privacy at this extremely painful time and we would like everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being, and revered musician who was loved universally. RIP Christine McVie.”

The British American rock band, founded in London in 1967, sold more than 100m records worldwide, making them one of the most successful groups ever. Their best-known songs include Dreams, Go Your Own Way and Everywhere.

The band paid tribute to the singer-songwriter McVie in a statement on Wednesday night following news of her death. “There are no words to describe our sadness at the passing of Christine McVie. She was truly one-of-a-kind, special and talented beyond measure.”

The statement on Twitter continued: “She was the best musician anyone could have in their band and the best friend anyone could have in their life.

“We were so lucky to have a life with her. Individually and together, we cherished Christine deeply and are thankful for the amazing memories we have. She will be so very missed.”

Despite its tumultuous history, Fleetwood Mac became one of the best-known rock bands of the 1970s and 80s, comprising Mick Fleetwood, Christine and John McVie, as well as Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks.

Nicks posted a handwritten note on Instagram to pay tribute. “A few hours ago I was told that my best friend in the whole world since the first day of 1975 had passed away,” she wrote. “I didn’t even know she was ill… until late Saturday night. I wanted to be in London; I wanted to get to London - but we were told to wait.”

Fleetwood wrote that McVie had “left us earthbound folks to listen with bated breath to the sounds of that ‘songbird’… reminding one and all that love is all around us to reach for and touch in this precious life that is gifted to us. Part of my heart has flown away today.”

McVie’s death comes two years after Fleetwood Mac co-founder Peter Green died at the age of 73.

Chicken Shack with Christine - See See Baby 

Christine born in Lancashire her family moved to the Black Country when she was but a small girl and she started her musical career in the Birmingham blues scene and played with many locals until joining Chicken Shack with Stan Webb on guitar. I saw them live (twice) and was very much taken with the ethereal blonde behind the keyboards and found her voice at once haunting and unusual in Blues circuit terms . . . . . . . 

Later after singing back up vocals for Fleetwood Mac she stepped in permanently to help out on vocals after Peter (Green) fell so desperately ill and the rest, as they say, is history.  Commercial success and then some was soon to follow. Personally I didn't care for the Americanised version and left them around the time Buckingham and Nicks joined [but at least they got rid of the dreadful predatory slide guitarist and self admitted pedophile, the vastly overrated Spencer]. I continued to follow Peter Green's trajectory back into playing live and yet always had a sneaking regard and respect for Christine.
